My thoughts on the "Applejack is a background pony" joke.

So there's a joke about Applejack being a background pony that's been going around the fandom for some time now. Believe it or not, I understand why people feel this way. I don't agree with it, mind you, but I understand it. Applejack just doesn't scream "look at me" as loud as the rest of the Mane 6 do. Rainbow Dash has her boasting, Pinkie Pie does the most random things you ever saw, Rarity has a certain flair for dramatics, Fluttershy squees and talks to animals, and Twilight Sparkle is freaking princess for crying out loud. Mean while, Applejack is just there, quietly being awesome.

 

I won't lie to you, when I first started watching the show, Applejack wasn't my favorite pony, in fact she was near the bottom of my list. Watching the show for the first time, it was so much easier for my to pay attention to the plot and the "louder' characters. In fact, Applejack was still at the bottom of my list after I'd caught up on all episodes of Friendship is Magic, it wasn't until I started rewatching episodes that she began to stick out to me.

 

During that second watch through, I already new the plot and the resolution, so I was able to focus in on some of the minutia of the series. This is the stage where I truly fell in love with not just Applejack, but My Little Pony as a whole. There's a difference between shows you can enjoy the first time, and ones you can watch over and over and always catch something new; Friendship is Magic is one of the later; and when you rewatch the episodes, I highly recommend paying extra attention to Applejack.

 

As many of you know, a lot of what I love about Applejack is how much she reminds me of wife. They are two of the hardest working folks I know, they both have a country upbringing, and a strong devotion to their respective families. It was during the rewatching of Applebuck Season that it snapped in my head. When I saw how stubborn Applejack was in that episode; I knew she was not only my wife in pony form; but also best pony.

 

But you don't have to be in love with my wife to love Applejack. Applejack is honest and dependable. She is the hardest worker you'll ever see, and the best friend you'll ever have. Sure, she can be a bit blunt at times, but only because she tells it like it is. And you know what they say... "A true friend will always tell you the truth, even if it hurts." And trust me friend, I'm telling you the truth... Applejack is best pony!

Personally, I've never even seen how that joke was funny. Not as in I was offended by it or it was lacking in taste, it just isn't really that humorous in general. Kind of a dumb joke, if you ask me - like knock knock jokes and what not.

 

Bleh. The internet has plenty of people who don't really amount to much in real life, so they can get on the internet and make all sorts of tasteless jokes and insult people and look all edgy and cool from behind the protection of a computer monitor. I find it to be sad, personally. I feel sorry for the people like that :huh: 

That's my guess on this, at least - it's just people trying to look edgy by insulting AJ. It's sad.

Bronies think their jokes are funny.... but SURPRISE! they're not. Just like "LOL MAUD PIE.... ROCKS" isn't funny. Bronies' jokes aren't funny.

 

Applejack should stand out for the fact she's levelheaded and handles situations well. Common sense trumps all. And dat accent and her fuckin' great hat.

Well, there is the fact it's usually AJ and Rarity being the butt of the jokes like this due to their historically small fanbases in comparison to the other members of the mane 6. It really just comes across as picking on the little guy - because I don't see any jokes like this about RD or Fluttershy, both of which have historically large fanbases.

 

That's the only real problem I have with it - other than that, I also think a joke should contain a little humor of sorts, whether it be shock humor or dirty humor or something - and I really can't see how that joke is considered to have any sense of humor :huh:

 

When you take all of the stuff I said about the possibility as to why people get upset with it, it still isn't a very good joke.

 

It's like "Hey, lol, Fluttershy is an earth pony because she doesn't fly very much." 

 

It's...yeahh :huh: If I was a stand-up comic telling these jokes to fellow bronies, I'd get booed off the stage - not because I was insulting ponies, but because my jokes really wouldn't very good.

I am right there with you. Applejack is my favourite pony, but sadly, here in the states, a lot of recent pony centric merchandise lacks Applejack. Recently I got a kids plastic dinner set and realized that they have 5 of main ponies on them...and guess who's missing....It's sad to see that the targeted demographic does not like Applejack and I believe that only compounds this silly notion to merch creators.

It is not true and completely overdone, and is even less true now than it was when it was first invented with Applejack's amazing character development in season 3 and season 4.

I'm less offended by the joke, and more just kind of confused. Applejack gets plenty of screen time, and I think anyone with a working set of looking holes would see that she gets as much time in the spotlight as the others.

if you ask me it's lame, stupid and not funny at all saying applejack is a background pony is like saying (all americans are lazy and fat people) or saying (russians are always bad)

Brony jokes are terrible. It's basically like "Hey lol Mr and Mrs Cake have twins, that means they must have had sex XXDXDXDXD LELELELELELE"

It's used just to annoy Applejack fans. That's what's annoying about it.
