My all-time favorite Thomas & Friends episode: The Flying Kipper

For those who haven't watched it, a little backstory. In Series 1, Henry the Green Engine had been feeling sick for some time, sometimes starting really slowly or not starting at all. It turned out the shape of the engine isn't designed to use the traditional coal on the Island of Sodor, which was degrading in quality. The other engines at the time (Thomas, Edward, Gordon, James, and Percy) had much bigger fireboxes; Henry's was small and couldn't make heat, requiring TFC to buy Welsh coal. Henry started to perform much, much better, leading up to this episode.

This, too, is one of my top favorites.

I find the early morning imagery to be amazing, setting the train to leave at about 5 AM. Henry and his train look absolutely spectacular moving down the main against the sunrise. Some of the best cinematography work of David Mitton's Clearwater Periscope lens system captures this in such a glorious way that I am nearly convinced in some shots that it's a real, full-scale train, but still aware that it's David and his crew hard at work in Shepperton spinning visual gold to complement Awdry's amazing story.

Lots of problems can be overcome, no matter how severe. It's great for Henry to see the end of his troubles due to a design flaw. But at the same time, you know how something bad always has to happen in order for the higher-ups to listen and go ahead with changing something that needs to be changed? Too bad a train crew almost had to be killed for that to happen!
