super's rants: Age Privileges

Hello everyone. While many of you consider rage to be clíched, I figured I'd do something like the sort, but with everyday things we run into. Let me know if I should continue or not. Thanks. :)

Issue #1: Age Privileges

I was trying out for a play today. It was for my school, and I was the only freshman boy there. After I finished my try outs, the person trying us all out called me back to speak with him. He then told me how he thought I was one of the most gifted and talented people he'd seen, but I probably wouldn't get a part. Upon asking why, he replied, and I quote, "Seniors always will get the part first, regardless of talent or interest." As you can guess, I was angry as shit. Just because a person is older, doesn't mean they automatically get the slot on everything. If you're barely interested, or are not into the role, but still a senior, shouldn't warrant you getting what you want because you're older. I mean hell, imagine if that was how we ran everything. If that was the case, JFK and other people of the sort would never have been in the picture. I can understand that they've been through more, and that it is their last years there, but my God, give younger people a chance. If by person is older, but isn't invested in their role, the play will bomb, and bomb hard. And I've seen this happen to other people too. This isn't just my anger; this is the anger of several other people who tried out and won't get parts, either. Why? Because they're young. It's just wrong.

This concludes my first rant. I hope you all can see my view. Leave a comment saying if I should continue or not, and leave a like if you enjoyed. Thank you all for reading.

I agree 100%. It's not how long someone has lived that should determine anything. That means nothing. If one is good at what they do and they're determined to succeed, then they should get a chance.

That's discrimination and should be brought to the principals attention immediately. Don't take this laying down. This is an easy fight despite how angry it makes you. It might also clear things up as to why the situation is like that or solve it entirely for future freshman with talent.

As a pre-service music teacher, that attitude disgusts me. What a pointless, terrible way to turn hopeful young talent away from the arts! When I run my own ensembles and choirs, they'll be organised by skill, not seniority.

I second what Twilight Circuits said, you should take this to the principal or the head of your Arts department and relay what you were told. Don't make it seem as though you're bitter for not getting the part, or they'll probably just dismiss you; make it clear to that that you feel this problem goes beyond your individual circumstance, and should be fixed for the sake of other talented kids in the future.

I think that the rigidity of the age-grading system and the reduction of opportunities for talented students in many schools to get ahead is a major failing of the education system these days. Talent is talent and bureaucracy should no longer warehouse students based on numbers like that.
