This happened more than twice, so I might as well write about it.

 

Today, somebody walked up behind me, saw the forums in my open tabs and asked if I was a brony.

 

In my mind, I'd say something like this:

"Yes."

 

But in reality, it was more like:

"Well, I guess so."

 

Bollocks. I need to work on this kind of stuff. It wasn't like I didn't know this guy either. I think the reason was because of the way/tone he asked it. And then of course, he immediately went and told the guy next to me that I was a brony, only to follow with "just kidding."

 

tl;dr, I need to work on this explaining stuff. It's bothering me.

 

Anyone have some advice?

Just own it and go about your day. If they see you're shy about it then they think you're embarrassed and escalate it to try and use it against you. Telling them like its no big thing would probably take them aback and just let the subject pass on through like any other conversation. 

 

I accidentally told my whole team at work about my enjoyment of mlp through our team chat XD. I just made a joke about owning it & how its good, then the team lead and I started blowing up the chat with talks about rainbows cause apparently she was big into care bears. Kinda made new friends at a new job by doing that

I second Sapphire StarDust's advice - the way you treat an interest signals to others how they should be reacting to it. :P If you treat it as just another TV show/hobby/pastime in conversation, it sends a strong hint that there's nothing "wrong" with it.

 

I make about as much of a secret IRL that I'm a brony as my being a Nintendo fan, UBC student, and a software developer. Result: I'm the one who stays chill if someone tries to freak out on me about watching MLP, and they only embarrass themselves. ;)

Get a little piece of merchandise to wear, like a keychain or something. I have a Derpy bag that I carried all my school stuff in. Everyone will know. They won't even need to ask. XD
