Hello, Everypony! And welcome to my very first blog! Well, technically my second, but the first one was an introduction, soooooo..... potatoes. Oh, and P.S., SPOILERS ENSUE IN THIS FORUM!!!!

Anyways, lets get started. I promised in the introducion that for my first (Second.... NYAAAN!) Blog post, I would talk about a very disliked villain in the MLP world. He is the great Crystal Tyrant and Lord of Shadows himself, King Sombra! Before I begin my case of defending this character however, I should make it clear that I may be a little biased. I like Sombra as a villain. Now even if after you read this post, and you still dislike Sombra, then please bring it up in the comments. I would love to have a peaceful conversation/debate with you. Now, without further a do, I bring you my defense case for King Sombra!

King Sombra appeared as the main antagonist in the Season 3 Premier, The Crystal Empire. In a flashback, he is shown as a black stallion in red/iron armor, with green eyes. One of the writers for the show said that he was meant to represent a character from Lord of the Rings, I am assuming Sauron. In the flashback we see that as king, he enslaved the whole of the Crystal Empire. The Crystal Empire, as Princess Celestia put it, was a place of hope and joy to all of Equestria. However, Sombra became the ruler and corrupted the Empire. The Crystal Ponies themselves lived as slaves. Now, this is where I want to begin my case for why he is a good villain.

Just from seeing this begining scene, we see how evil he was. He enslaved a once happy and proud kingdom, putting shackles on the ponies and forcing them into hard labor. If you observe the shackles the ponies are wearing a little more closely, you will see something that should not be in a kids show for little girls: Blood. Or at least a red liguid of some kind..... I am going to assume its blood. Unless Sombra had them paint his evil halls red. Anyway, if it was blood, this shows not only that Sombra was a tyrant, but he was also OBRESSIVE. He would beat his citizens into work. Or that his citizens worked so hard that they were physically harmed. I dont know if there is some comic out there that explains exactly what Sombra did to his subjects, but I would be interested to know what exactly Sombra forced the ponies to do.

The next scene we see is Celestia and Luna banishing Sombra from his physical form (turning him into the Shadow Lord), and banished him beneath the ice. But before he could be completely banished, he placed a curse over the Empire, saying that as long as he was banished, the Crystal Empire would be banished as well. So, not only did Sombra oppress his citizens, he also had the whole of the civilization vanish when he lost control of it.

Throughout the rest of the 2 parter, we actually dont see Sombra that much. We only see him as a cloud of darkness surrounding the Crystal Empire. However, while his giant form is terrifying, it is not necessarily his presence that is frightening. When the Mane 6 arrive in the Crystal Empire and begin talking to the Crystal ponies, they say they remember nothing of there past. Except for him. So, Sombra scared them so much that they cant even remember who they once were, only his oppressive rule. It is only until light and hope fills the city again do they start remembering who they were before Sombra.

I could go on for hours on this subject, but I will spare you readers. Maybe this could be a part one for my Defense of Sombra. If you guys want a part two, simply ask, and I will give! That, or when I finally join the Youtube analysis community, I will discuss it all in a video. Either way, I would like to thank you guys for hearing me ramble on for as long as I have. If you guys have any suggestians for what I should write next, just post it in the chat! Whether it is an Episode, Fan-animation, fanfiction, or whatever, just ask, and I will write my honest opinion.

Juggerpony out!

You forgot his impressive, Xanatos Gambit traps:

If they worked, the Crystal Heart stayed his. But if they failed — the last trap still let him recorrupt the Crystal Castle, and lock the intruder(s) in an anti-magic zone.

I was going to go there, but then I decided that, if everyone wanted, I would include it in a part 2. No, I completely agree. He wanted to have complete dominance over the kingdom, and refused to relinquish it, even after his defeat.

The only villain to gain something even in defeat.

At least until we learned about Discord's Plunderseeds. And even then, by the time they finally took effect, he'd already become an antihero (Discord: "Oopsie!").

Of the villains, my favorite is Discord. I will do a blog on that sometime! My second is Tiriek. Sombra is my third.

I just read your comment for the forth time, and now I am thinking of my next post! Villain back-up plans!

Sombra is considered the most disliked villain of MLP? Huh, he's my most favourite. My only gripe with him is the lack of a developed character; I might like him even more if they expand on him and his personality in either season five or the possible season six.

I think people dislike him because in the Crystal Empire, for the most part, did ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING. He just sat there, outside the shield. Granted, i agree with you, he is my 3rd favorite villain. And here.

This is a web comic on the backstory of Sombra. I am thinking of including this info in my part 2 of "Defending King Sombra"

And those same people forget he did plenty in advance, which let him nearly win despite waiting outside said shield.
