A Petition to Stop Unnecessary Debates

A Black Circle

Debates. They happen a lot on this forum. So much, in fact, that a whole section was dedicated to it. But nonetheless, it has not stopped its frequency on these forums. Whenever I go to a thread, I just want to post something and move on. It's a good way to let off steam, or maybe start a conversation with someone like-minded. But no. 90% of threads I post on that have some sort of opinion on it will get debated by someone. I used to do this. It was annoying, pointless, and occasionally kind of rude. I apologize for doing it, because it was stupid.

There seem to be certain people who are the type to start arguments for god-knows-why, and I'm not going to name them; half out of courtesy, and half because I can't remember things too well. But to these people, I have something to say to you: It is pointless. Now, I know what you're thinking. "Debates are useful. It allows people to see the other sides of disputes, and spread open-mindedness." Let me tell you from experience: this doesn't happen. I wish it did, but the human brain does not do this. If you DO change your mind about something major (I'm talking religion and politics here), it will most likely not be out of a debate.

But still, if you insist, there is a debate pit. That 90% figure I mentioned before: that doesn't account for the debate pit, because I haven't been there. It goes to show how much debating is not in the debate pit. It's there for a reason. Keep. It. There. Before posting, think about whether or not you're in a debate-oriented thread. If you aren't, Don't. Post.

TL;DR: Debate is pointless. But if you insist, keep the debates in the debate pit.

Consider, and remember: this blog post isn't a debate thread ;) .

EDIT: 20/04/15: Because I can't do words, I didn't mention in this blogpost that the major sector of this is atheists.

I'm going to start by saying I am definitely not one for debates. I also find them to be quite unproductive.

Though there are people who enjoy having them. Whether or not it's something they truly care about, they just enjoy the acts of it.

The whole reason the debate pit is a thing is so that moderation could keep it under one "mess" pile to try to keep under control. This is all the inevitable controversial stuff. Though in there, or elsewhere on the forums, there are useless arguments left and right that will lend to nowhere. You couldn't make it a forum rule to be against it, either wise the population of this forum would be slit in half, if not more. (unless the arguments become offensive, then action is taken) It's just like every other forum on the internet. You can try to convince people, but I don't believe they'll care at all.

When it comes to posting, with me at least, I tend to keep my opinion at a stance where people know it, and they know it won't be changed. That is whenever I do feel like posting outside forum games and media discussion....

Anyway best of luck with your Petition.

Is this up for debate?

Meh. I don't see anything debatable.

When I say thread hijacking, an example would be a random Christian thread where Christians converse about something, and some atheist comes in and is all like "*rabble* *rabble* *debate* *rabble *rabble*." This has happened to two threads. That I've seen.

I say we have a petition to stop unnecessary petitions :3

No but seriously, you aren't going to stop people having dumb arguments about religion. Its practically human nature xD

Then how was I able to stop myself?

I realized it was pointless. I hope the kind of people who do this see the same way.

Because most of the time the people who are massively anti religion have just become atheists and are kind of pissed off about the fact (that they feel) like they've been lied to their entire lives (Or just really smug and pretentious).
I used to be the same. A petition won't help, people just have to learn not to be twats at their own rate xD

Wow, you're kind of right.

Atheists, stop being so salty and invasive about religion. 1.01.0 (Unless you totally aren't, then you're OK, of course.)

Also, @Retro*Derpy, I just realized that you said that a debate ban would cut off some of the users from this forum.

That's actually really sad.
