My Top 10 Favorite Consoles

Today, I'm going to do something a little different. I've been in a Top 10 mood lately, so... ye.

Anyway, as the title suggests, this is my Top 10 Favorite Consoles. Self-explanatory. Buuuut, I'm going to place a couple rules regarding the list.

-I have to play more than 3 games from the console, whether it be via emulation, ports of the games, or some other random way, to place the console. As much as I want to put game consoles like the Wii U and Sega Saturn, I've only played a demo of NSMB U in stores on the former, and Sonic R and NiGHTS into Dreams for the latter.

-I don't count PC, mobile phones or tablets as consoles. I'll only count home consoles or handheld consoles, so before you go "Y U NO PC MASTER RACE," I don't count it as a console. Although I do plan on giving thoughts on PC gaming in the future.

With that said..

This review comes from the opinions of the poster himself. This does not reflect the opinions of the rest of the gaming community.

10. Sega Master System (1986)

Here's a console that, while it didn't do as good as the NES in the States or Japan, it still had a list of great games in it's library, such as Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Sonic 1 8-bit, Phantasy Star, and numerous ports of Sega's arcade games. And while it didn't have much support compared to the NES, that often meant this had a less amount of bad games, at least! Although I don't consider this as good as the other retro systems (and there's going to be.. alot) on my list, and it doesn't have as much memorable games as the NES, it's still a good system in it's own right.

9. Nintendo Entertainment System (1985)
IMG_1679.JPG
Here's the classic 8-bit system that lots of people still remember fondly of! While it has the most annoying 72-pin connector ever (at least on the 1985-1992 models), it's still a system that's remembered for helping us out of the video game crash of 1983-84, and it's game collection. While there are a lot of crappy games on the system (just watch Angry Video Game Nerd to realize why), there's still tons of great games that are considered classics to this day, such as Super Mario Bros 1-3, Contra, the classic Mega Man games, Castlevania, Metroid and Legend of Zelda.. although I wasn't really a fan of the first 2 Zelda games pls don't kill me.
But yeah, it's definitely a classic system. While I personally prefer playing it's library on the 3DS or Wii Virtual Console, it's still no wonder it's considered a classic, even today.

8. Nintendo 64 (1996)

[insert obvious video reference here]
In all honesty, I feel similar about both the N64 and NES, and that while they brought good games, I usually prefer playing them via the Virtual Console and 3DS remakes. But, with that said, it is one system that has brought many great games, such as Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and pretty much all the Rareware games. Not to mention, for it's time, it was a great system for being with friends, thanks to having 4 control ports and games like Mario Kart 64 and Super Smash Bros, and was overall a rather innovative system in plenty of ways, such as the fact that they made the analog stick mainstream and using it with 3D open world games like Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. I do feel it hasn't aged well in plenty of ways, but still a great and classic system.

7. Sega Dreamcast (1999)
Sega-dreamcast-set_mini1.png
The Sega Dreamcast is one system that I feel had a lot of unseen potential and was incredibly ahead of it's time, but sadly failed due to numerous reasons, mainly Sega's previous business choices with the Sega Genesis add-ons and Sega Saturn. It had a lot of things that consoles now had, such as built in internet (yes, there were consoles that had internet before this one, but this is the first one that had it built into the system), HD graphics (via certain cables making it 480p), and even a similar controller design to the Xbox and Xbox 360. Not to mention, it's game library was great. Sonic Adventure 1 (wasn't a fan of SA2, sorry), Jet Set Radio, Shenmue and Crazy Taxi just to name a few. Not to mention Seaman, I mean, a game that you can talk to a fish. GG.

6. Nintendo Wii (2006)

Yeah, ye heard me right. The Nintendo Wii is on this list. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Now, while I can understand why many might not like this system, the whole WiiMote thing felt really forced into many of it's great exclusives, like Super Mario Galaxy, looking past that, there's not much I have against this system, and a lot I like. First of all, it's exclusives are some of my favorite games from Nintendo, such as Super Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Zelda: Skyward Sword, and other companies like Sega with Sonic Colors. And not to mention the Virtual Console. Most of the N64 games play much better on the Wii VC in my opinion, and some games even on my favorite consoles are rather expensive, and considering that 1. I don't support PC emulation and 2. emulation has a whole has problems of it's own, having many games available on the Wii VC for low prices tends to appeal to me. It was one of the first consoles I owned, and it gave me various fun times with many of it's games.

5. Nintendo 3DS (2011)
Nintendo-3DS.jpg
Okay, random thing, I do have a 2DS, but since it's under the same family, I'm not sure if I would count it as it's own console.
Anyway, funny thing, but when it first came out, I thought the 3DS sucked and was some dumb gimmicky handheld by Nintendo. But, as more exclusives and features came out for it, it started appealing to me more. And for good reason. It's game library is probably the best game library on a handheld and probably even on modern consoles in general.. maybe next to the Wii U (haven't played many of it's games sadly ;-; ), with games such as Super Mario 3D Land, Link Between Worlds, Super Smash Bros 4 and Dream Team, and also the numerous features it has, such as internet browsing, Hulu, Netflix and Virtual Console. It all makes it my favorite handheld console yet, and overall, one of my favorite consoles of all time.

4. Playstation (1995)

Admittedly, it hasn't aged graphically well either. But, I still have tons of fun on this system. I really like the DualShock controller, and many of it's exclusives, such as the Classic Crash Bandicoot (as you can see from my PSOne screen where I was playing CTR xd) and Spyro games, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Ape Escape, Metal Gear Solid.. well, simply put, there's like 1000 games for it, so there's tons of classics.. and tons of bad games, but let's not talk about those! It also pretty much proved that CD based technology was the way to go in many ways, from how simple and cheap they were to use, to overall cinematics of the games.

3. Sega Genesis (1989)
oGQ5yqN.jpg
In my opinion, the Sega Genesis as a whole was Sega at it's best. It had a great controller, great exclusives such as, obviously, the Sonic the Hedgehog series as well as Comix Zone and Ristar, and it's no wonder this led to the biggest battle between Nintendo and Sega during the early 90's. And I also find it interesting how it had a lot of features that many modern systems have today. They weren't built in but still, it had CD compatibility with the Sega CD, 32 Bit support with the 32X, wireless controllers and internet services. But anyway, that added with the exclusives made it my third favorite console to date.

2. Nintendo Gamecube (2001)
MUhovrl.jpg
While it didn't have DVD support like the PS2 and Xbox had or didn't focus much on internet capabilities, the Gamecube is still my favorite 6th gen console. It's game library is full of great games like Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, SSB Melee, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Animal Crossing and quite a few others, plus it had the GBA links and Gameboy Player which I liked, and the controller is one of the best ones I've held, plus it was one of the first video game consoles I played along with the PS1. It's too bad that Nintendo didn't do much with the console, and pretty much dropped any of the support they held for it when the Wii came out, but besides for that, it's still my second favorite console. As for my favorite console, that is..

1. Super Nintendo Entertainment System (1991)
PnTVRfg.png
If you guys know me well, or if you've seen the titles of my blogs.. or just knew me since I joined as SuperNESBrony, you probably saw this one coming. Yes, the Super NES is still my favorite console of all time, for numerous reasons. Let's just say, most, if not all of the stuff that I like to see in consoles, this system did well. I have a lot of memories playing games like Super Mario World and Link to the Past at my grandparents' house, and even when I bought one for myself in 2013, it's still bringing me lots of fun with no end in sight. The console alone has probably my 3 favorite Nintendo games of all time, those being Yoshi's Island, Star Fox and, again, if you know me well, definitely Super Mario World, which is my favorite video game of all time. The graphics also look pretty good for it's time, and even today are mostly nice to look at, and were definitely an improvement over the original NES. The sound was beautiful if it was done at it's full potential, and even the controller is personally my favorite of all time. It fits into my hands well and, let's just say there's a reason why many consoles now use the "diamond button" design shown here. Also, the design of the system (as long as it hasn't yellowed :P) is light gray and purple, which is the same color scheme of (tied) best pony, so yeah.
But overall, although I love my other consoles, this and the PC (which I didn't count on this list because reasons I've already said) are pretty much where I go when I want the best gaming experience.

I would have to agree with that.....

However, you're forgiven for having the SNES as #1. That's my second favorite console. :D
