Hello everyone! Looks like I've decided to start a blog, for anypony who's interested.

Here I'll post art, advice, and thoughts related to mlp. Hopefully I wont bore you!

For my first entry, I just wanted to post about this subject that simply wouldn't fit anywhere else on this forum: The family of my OC, Amber.

Amber started out as many characters do--based on myself, her creator. But after a while, she became someone else entirely. I did the same with her siblings, initially basing them off of my own, and gradually changing and adapting them to the world--and adding in an extra, for good measure! :P

The two oldest are Pegasus twins--the blue-eyed stallion and the purple mare are Magnum Opus and Crystal Clasp, a scholar and a jeweller.
Next is Ignius Quartz, or Ignius, the brown Earth pony, who's a geologist.
Lastly, before Amber, we have Piston Whirl, a mechanical engineer.

All members of Amber's family had rocks or minerals in their cutie mark, and Amber is the only Unicorn in her immediate family.

These pictures were made on Generalzoi's Ponymaker V3, if it wasn't obvious, excluding Amber, who was an edit from a Twilight Sparkle vector.

Today's question:
I'm curious, do your characters have family? How much of your character's life and history is recorded in your head, but not on paper or online? Do you branch off from your character to make places, things, and other characters? I'm always curious about how other people create their worlds, so go ahead and post your stories in the comments!

If you're referencing the name from one of the classifications of rocks, then the proper spelling would be Igneous. If the apparent misspelling is intentional, however, then okay.

As for today's question, yeah, pretty much all of them have a family to some extent or another. Sunburn and Erythema are twin siblings. Cradles Embrace and Snow Perch are mother and son (he has other siblings but I haven't gotten to work on them). Morning Solitude (Sully) has two older siblings; Meadow Howl and Metro Shade. Their parents are Embers and Snug Roll. I've thought about having fleshing out Embers' family as well.

Much of their backstories are unwritten. Some of it intentionally. The twins have backstories that are too dark so it's best that it be left omitted -- especially if it isn't relevant. Both are leading peaceful lives and wish to leave the past behind them. Both are employed and are contributing members to Equestrian society; the sister is part of the fire brigade with the brother working as a library assistant.

My OC has two parents. I did not go in to a lot depth with his parents. I gave his parents a job, and that's about it. They are a basically blank slates. I don't plan on expanding on their characters.

My OC lived with her older sister for a little while. She does have parents who care about her. I really like yours though! x3

I ain't mucha OC person... I do think "Hey, how could I be a part of this franchise if I were a character in it?" But I did try to come up with some "Complete-orphan" characters who had amnesia so as far as they know they they created themselves... but I never felt like oc-ing... doesn't feel right

I'm not a person who creates tons of OCs, but rather remains loyal to one.

However, Star does indeed has some greater background in my head. Her parents are only common folk, living peaceful life in Manehattan. But she does have a younger sister, nameless, in my mind. And that sister differs vastly from Star. While Star's emotional, somewhat irrational and often follows her heart rather than remaining rational, her sister's nearly the polar opposite. She's not as popular in general and tends to be calm and calculated. In short, I've got all of her personality and backstory in my mind, they just require being written down (assuming I ever wanted to do so).

I mean, such things add flavor to an OC. There's a number of stories about what these two did together in my mind. Because siblings aren't there to just exist, but rather to live together and create memories.

Imperio, Star's pet, was created to keep her company and fit into her lively personality, to make sure she's not a loner. And he has a very carefully lined out personality too, even though his story is vague and short.

The more depth, the merrier. One day I need to write her out.
