My Little Pony: A Saccharine Show full of Woobies

For those of you who wonder what Woobie means, it's where the audience feels sorry for the character.  In my mind, it seems My Little Pony is filled to the brim of Woobies.  Characters that always seem to put in a horrible situation where the audience can't help, but cry for them.

Each of the Mane 6 and Spike has had their own experiences as Woobies.

Twilight due to her own Superiority complex and her original lack of social skills.  Even after becoming an Alicorn, she had her own disappointments in her status as a princess.  Her Equestria Girls counterpart got it even worse due to her own past as Midnight Sparkle and her own personal fear of becoming a demon again.

Applejack due to her stress of working, the loss of her parents, and in some cases, the fear of losing Apple BLoom

Fluttershy an obvious example because of her scared status, especially early in the season.  This is especially true of Hurricane Fluttershy, due to her own traumatic past.

Pinkie Pie's an even more obvious form, especially where she grew up on, her Pinkamena counterpart when she's really depressed, and it rang true in Pinkie Pride, when she feared she was going to be replaced

Rarity is usually an over-the-top Woobie.  She puts all her hard work into what she does and she takes it seriously.  Fame and Misfortune showcases when Rarity is ostracized for dumb reasons, and she turns into a complete mess

Rainbow Dash gets it worse, especially during her journey to become a Wonderbolt, when she is normally left out, the fact that she was teased as a filly, and the fact that she nearly lost her status as a Wonderbolt in Rarity Investigates.

Spike also gets this as well.  Though he has been through alot, he has taken it alot as well.  From episodes like Owl's Well that Ends Well, the Crystal Empire Part 2, and even the Power Ponies really showcase the more depressing side of the dragon.  He even fears of being ousted from his only family(As showcased in Crystal Empire Part 2)

The Cutie Mark Crusaders(Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo) underwent this during their quest to get their cutie marks.  The worst that all three went through was Ponyville Confidential, where their status as Gabby Gums made them shunned by the entire town, and ridiculed by Diamond Tiara for not getting enough juicy gossip, to the point where they had to trick Diamond into printing an apology into the newspaper for what they've done.  But outside that, they have had their own problems as well.  Especially Scootaloo with her lack of an ability to fly.

Surprisingly, Diamond Tiara was pushed down this path because of wanting to be like her mother Spoiled Milk, only to be emotionally abused by her.

Starlight Glimmer also counts as one, especially coming from a former villain.  Her own personal anxieties often control her own emotions, and she's quick to breaking down.  Examples include the Crystalling, No Second Prances, A Royal Problem and Uncommon Bond.  With Haber hinting at a troubled fillyhood(Starlight as a Latch-Key Kid and a theory that she might have been bullied), is it any wonder that Starlight is lucky to have friends like Twilight?

Sunset Shimmer also went down this path.  Shunned in Rainbow Rocks for what she did in the first Equestria Girls movie, uncomfortable around her new friends, and afraid of becoming the monster she was.  It was played even further with Friendship Games, when her lack of magic understanding caused her to have an emotional breakdown.

Discord, another former villain, also went down due to being distrusted by most of his new friends.  He usually hid this with his usual banter.  But Twilight's Kingdom made Discord realize that Friendship is something worth fighting for.  He got hit with this even further with Discordant Harmony, when his attempt to reign in his chaotic side nearly cost him his life.

Trixie as well.  After her humiliation in Boast Busters where she became the laughing stock of Equestria, she went down the path of evil out of a desire for revenge.  She did reform, but No Second Prances showcases that she still desired to top Twilight Sparkle, and when it blew up in her face, it broke her even further.  It took Starlight to mend everything and become a good friend to Trixie.

Even the Princesses went through this as well.

Princess Cadence nearly missed out on her own wedding.  And not only that, it almost cost Equestria its own freedom.  It took alot of tears and toil to fight to stop the wedding, and a last minute Light in the Darkest Hour to save Equestria and save the wedding

Princess Luna due to her past as Nightmare Moon.  While the people of Equestria forgave her, she didn't forgive herself and went through a lot in Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sleep, to the point where she nearly wrecked Equestria through an accident.  Even in A Royal PRoblem, it seems she still suffers through her own nightmares.

And even Princess Celestia has her own issues.  Having been separated from Princess Luna for a thousand years nearly took a toll on her mental state.  Even after reclaiming her sister, it seems her life as the Prime Princess of Equestria has worn her out every day, as demonstrated in A Royal Problem.  Even someone as magnificent as Princess Celestia has her own down days, to live up to the expectations of her subjects.  The fact that she also has an evil, more destructive, side really drives her point home.

Those are just some of the examples of My Little Pony characters hit with the Woobie Status.  In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the remaining villains were also hit with this(Ex: Lord Tirek with his bitterness towards his brother Scorpan) to the point where the audience actually "Cries for the Devil."

What are your thoughts on My Little Pony characters being Woobies?  Do you think it adds to the franchise?  Or does it make it too depressing?

And then she had to spend her honeymoon nearly killing herself in a stalemate with Pony!Sauron.

I think a lot of people forget that Daybreaker was the dream creation of someone else.

Oh yeah, if Celestia ever lost hear marbles, I absolutely agree that she’d be devastatingly dangerous. But I believe her mental resolve and moral code are way to strong for that to ever happen without outside forces overriding her will. And that mare as a will of IRON.

Some think she was scared because she secretly has actually felt that way before, a secret wickedness she hides from the world. I think she was more freaked out because I know if I was suddenly confronted with a being that looked just like me, claimed to BE me, and was say, a serial killer covered in blood and holding a knife, I’d be more than a little unnerved.

This really doesn’t just apply to MLP. EVERY hero has to go through SOME kind of challenge in their stories. Otherwise there’s really no story. Every hero has flaws they need to overcome. Every hero has to suffer at some point.
