Popular Pony Humanization Trends

blog-0866630001346201949.jpgSo as much as anyone else here really I am a huge fan of My Little Pony related art. Though one area of Pony art that people have mixed opinions about is the Humanization art.

I guess I can see why some people don't like it. It is taking favorite characters from the show from lovable Ponies to boring humans like you and me. Others don't like it because it does cause some debate on finding an impossible "canon" human version on the Ponies.

Truth is these arguments are silly and pointless seeing that there is no correct answer. The human look all depends on the artist's imagination.

Though I have been spotting a few popular trends with the art style, some I agree with some I don't. So let's look into these trends.

Twilight Sparkle

Twilight Sparkle is one of the easier Mane 6 to try to personify as a human. Most people try to go for a more modest nerdy look which makes sense due to her love of books and knowledge.

People tend to give her a modest build and usually school girl clothing to further the look.

In my opinion this popular image of Twilight Sparkle I rather like. Its how I'd picture her as a human, though... always wearing school girl clothing would be kinda odd no matter how much you study! :P

Also Twilight Sparkle seems to be the epicenter of the racial debate on humanization. Due to Twilight having a darker coat, some give her darker or black skin. Some even make her Asian because they feel it makes her look smarter.

Really I don't care how you race the characters. But I understand that to some its a huge debate on how to race the human ponies.

Applejack

Applejack... obviously the cowgirl look is inevitable because her personality demands it! Though some people seem to go a bit further and give her more of a "Daisy Duke" look.

Both looks are fine I suppose though I think that one should focus more on making her look strong than a sexy cowgirl...

But hey you can do both at the same time! ;)

Rainbow Dash

Athletic is really the best term to describe the popular Rainbow Dash physique. Normally lean, no fat, all muscle, built for speed look is used with her coupled with track suits or other popular athletic clothing.

This popular depiction makes perfect sense seeing that Dash is all about being the fastest athlete alive. I rather like the look because it gives further variety to the Human Mane 6 body types.

Rarity

blogentry-461-0-64035500-1346199612.png

Rarity is an elegant lady. She usually has a more mature model body and long flowing dresses (which of course are probably designed by her). Giving her jaw dropping good looks and fabulous style is perfect for Rarity since she love to show off her beauty.

I guess I also have no issues with this look because I rather like it. Though the model look is slightly questionable since not all designers typically have the build to model their own clothing, so its not terrible to turn away from the super model look.

Fluttershy

blogentry-461-0-83279200-1346199636.png

Fluttershy is usually very angelic looking. Being a kind and gentle soul it makes sense to make her look the part. She's normally drawn hiding behind her long locks due to her shyness, blushing a lot of the time.

Now I do like the soft and warm angel look for Fluttershy, though... how do I put this lightly... I've noticed that people tend to give her rather large breasts. Now that's fine if that's what you want. I sorta get that she's supposed to be some kind of jaw dropper who hides this highly attractive figure, but that's not quite the look I'd envision for Fluttershy.

I imagine, akin to Twilight Sparkle, a more modest figure to match her personality a bit more.

Then again this is all my personal opinion on the fad. If you want big boob Fluttershy then more power to you!

Pinkie Pie

blogentry-461-0-06269100-1346199660.png

The party girl. She's normally dressed in fun looking skirts and stockings and dressed to party. Though my favorite asset of human pinkie tends to be her hair! Giant cotton candy perm hair! I just LOVE to see it. The more puffy the better.

Pinkie's body seems to vary a bit, but my personal favorite is Chubby Pinkie!

I guess the idea is that she enjoys sweets and perhaps has a bit of weight due to her love, but its okay Pinkie can have fun and not dwell on such things. Alike to Athletic Dash and Model Rarity, this adds more body variety to the group. I have no idea why exactly, but I just find her much more lovable with a bigger figure.

I guess everyone will have their favorite humanizations for different reasons, but Chubby Pinkie takes the cake for me! :)

So what are some of your opinions on humanization styles of Ponies? How do you imagine them? What other popular trends have you noticed that I may have not mentioned?

Humanization trends? I think you summed them up perfectly.

Though you missed the part that most artists tend to go for a generic cute anime style, and make the ponies extremely attractive according to their preferences. (Which usually includes big breasts, as we've seen with Fluttershy.) I honestly don't agree with the majority of humanizations. The oversaturation of anime style and emphasis on sexiness overwhelms me. I prefer more realistic depictions.

There's only two depictions I've seen that have satisfied me. One was posted by a member of these forums, which depicted chubby Pinkie Pie which I totally agree with. And then there's another I saw once on DA where they actually gave the Mane Six more realistic/toned down human eye colors whilst making them resemble their ACTUAL eyes at the same time. It was quite cool, and I prefer this type of humanization. I've never been one to like random purple eyes. It works on ponies, but not humans.

Let me find the depictions...

Can't find that chubby Pinkie Pie one. But here's a good example of Rainbow Dash in the series.

As well, this creator gives the Mane Six appearance FLAWS, making them look even more realistic. The faces look like actual human faces.

That's really my opinions on it.

Ah yes. i guess overly sexy anime style should have been referenced since the trend has essentially become the style itself.

Yeah realistic human ponies seems to be a HUGE minority in humanization of the characters in general, and I find that a real shame. Its a style that could really make for some other amazing art.

And yes flaws make a character much more interesting, probably part in why I like Chubby Pinkie so much because having an ounce of fat on a woman seems to be demonized as a huge flaw to some, but to me it makes them different and therefore more interesting.
