Helm's Deep

Lord Valtasar

if you're going to do something, you might as well make it epic.
thats what i told my friends when they asked me to make a board for their Lord of the rings miniature gaming
for me that meant a huge castle and we quickly decided on Helm's deep,it needed to be cheap since our budget wasn't exactly great,so i decided to go with foam(and tons of toothpicks to make it stay put)even though i never worked with it before(a sheet of isolating foam costs about 5$ and its pretty big so i just needed one)to keep this short, here is how it looked like 2 days later

then i proceeded to add plaster to make the seems dissapear, and it was time to add the mountains,it would take lots of time and material to make it from foam,so i decided to use old newspapers mixed with glue, which also helped keep the weight down, here how that turned out

after some finishing toutches on the mountains and some layers of glue to make it more sturdy,it was time to paint it,first i covered it all in black, making sure i got even the deepest nukes and cranies,i also mixed some glue with the paint on this layer just to make sure it will stick on the foam parts,i didn't get a photo of this stage unfortunately, but it looked quite neat all in black,
i then dry brushed some grays on top of the black 4 layers in total i think, since it needed to be playable,i kept the ground mostly flat.but added some crumbled, then restraightened newspaper just for the texture, lastly i scattered a few  spare bushes they had from previous landscaping and it was done, here are some samples, the lighting situation was terrible, sorry

here's one more for scale

i really like how it turned out, maybe i'll make more projects like this in the future, though i'd like to try it in different settings(not from Lord of the rings)if you have any cool ideas drop them bellow
it took about 15 days of work and the total cost was about 20$(mostly spent on glue)which i consider a total bargain,so don't let anyone tell you you can't follow a hobby if you don't have tons of money to throw on it
