An Idea: Create a Logo Contest for FIM Characters, FIM Places/Events, and Brony-Related Conventions

Feld0's Poniverse Logo Contest seems to be going well. Some people have submitted logo concepts already, and I hope to see the results once done. (It ends on the 14th, so submit them quickly!) Once the final drafts are published, expect me to write a review for the official logo and the finalists similar to the one I wrote for the MLP Forums logo at the beginning of the year.

Several months ago, via e-mail, I suggested to Equestria Daily a logo contest for the Friendship Is Magic characters and various big-named events of the brony fandom (pro-brony, of course). Here is the e-mail I sent last year:

Dear Equestria Daily,

Several months ago, you and WeLoveFine together created a contest to develop the official Equestria Daily logo. Despite the glitch in the poll system, it was a whole lot of fun to actually get involved and submit it for viewing. The reward was to have it on a T-Shirt and other prizes.

This time, as a major fan of graphic design and logos, what I'm proposing is another logo contest. But instead of Equestria Daily, how about hypothetical logo(s) for the actual characters (or groups of characters like the Mane Six), the places/events/holidays from the universe of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, and/or brony conventions themselves? We have a collection of characters, places/events, and conventions with various moods, personalities, qualities, colors, audiences, and so on. But we don't really see them captured in the form of a logotype, signature (a combination of the trademark and wordmark), or trademark (the main symbol of the signature). Instead of creating something that is complex and full of depth like full-fledged artwork, this would be a great way to design something that's creative, yet simple. And great logos are about simplicity yet carry a strong message. (I wrote a how-to based on my experience and research here*, developed various hypothetical brony-related logos here and here, and critiqued the three final logos for the official EQD logo contest at the bottom of this post.)

One thing about the brony community is the ability to create. But we don't see a lot of graphic design, and when I do, it's very miniscule and tends to be so-so. (For instance, I frowned hard at some of the poor execution in the BronyCon program, such as the contained body and the pixelated map of the convention.) For rewards, I actually am not thinking of any. I'm more or less going for consolation or self-congratulations. Because personally, the brony community needs more great graphic designers, and logo design is great to learn and understand proper color, placement, symbols, typography, and overall messages sent.

While Sethisto liked the idea, it never got off the ground.

This is where I now turn to you, MLP Forums.

Following the Poniverse logo contest, are you for creating a logo contest for the FIM characters, places/events in the FIM universe (canon or fanon), and brony conventions?

*Replaced the old link with the current one for this blog entry's sake. If you want to read how I develop logos, here is the entry.

Tentatively, I'd say this sounds like a really fun event. Would there be any prizes associated with it?

The other thought that comes to mind is, do cutie marks not already serve as characters' logos?

That I haven't exactly thought about. Currently, I'm thinking more as a free "pat-on-the-back" thing.

No, I don't see it as the characters' logo. The cutie marks' purposes are to demonstrate what their most interested capabilities are. It doesn't demonstrate them as a whole.

Secondly, if I were to hold for this contest, I'd be against holding any kind of pony asset, including cutie marks, in the logo. There are ways to capture the character without having to slap the cutie mark somewhere.
