"A Canterlot Wedding" Plot Holes Filled (In which I tell the story from Chrysalis' perspective)

blog-0421188001369379162.pngSo Chrysalis gets this idea that she can take over Equestria if she can get its capital under control. Gotta admit, that’s probably where I would start too. But then things get weird. Is Chrysalis stupid? Or what? She does a lot of things (many addressed in Antony C's

) that make it seem like she had no real plan at all.

Well, this is my headcannon that attempts to explain it.

Alright, so Chrysalis makes her way to some small town at the edge of Equestria, and takes the appearance of some random earth pony she sees. Then, she hops on the train to Canterlot, and arrives smoothly. Why does she go alone? She figures that taking an army straight up to Canterlot without knowing anything about the place or its defense would be a bad idea, so she decided to scout out the place a bit. Nothing should go wrong, because she looks exactly like any old pony. Also, she had the rest of her army traveling by night, to sneak into the mountains outside the city. If anything were to go awry… they’d just have to wing it.

So far, there is no threat against Canterlot, so there is no shield and no guard ponies with weird probe thingies which assumedly uncover disguises (much like guards outside Gringotts from Harry Potter). Well, not long after Chrysalis arrives in Canterlot she realizes that there is going to be a wedding between an Alicorn Princess and the captain of the Royal Guard. (It bothers me that such big news as this hadn’t spread further into Equestria yet, but I’ll not focus on that right now.) Well, these two are supposed to be wildly in love with one another, so Chrysalis gets this fancy idea that she could use that love to make her a neigh-unstoppable force.

The next thing to do would be to take on the appearance of Cadence, so she could feed on Shining Armor’s love. After spending some time searching, Chrysalis finds the not-so-humble abode of Princess Mi Amore Cadenza. Unfortunately for Chrysalis, one cannot simply walk into the house of an Alicorn Princess.

After a long hard day without much in the way of food, Chrysalis was ready to be done with it. It’s pretty dark out, she thought, I could just change back and fly right up to that balcony… no one would notice.

Turns out a lot of ponies noticed. Enough screams and reports of a changeling sighting in the city made its way to Celestia and Luna that they contacted the captain of the Royal Guard immediately.

Chrysalis walks tentatively into an upstairs room, ready to scuffle if necessary. She ends up finding Cadence by practically running into her coming around a corner. In a blind panic, Chrysalis teleports her (and the pony next to her) in the first direction she thinks of - down. (Annoying Chrysalis voice: "The mines beneath Canterlot!")

When both ponies recover from the initial shock of the unexpected teleportation, things get serious. Cadence has just been teleported to an unknown location with the Queen of the Changelings, and she’s not going down without a fight. In a semi-epic battle, the two fight it out in the caves. Cadence, unlike Chrysalis, has not devoted her life to the art of war, and soon enough is knocked out by the latter. Chrysalis then takes the form a Cadence, and tries to find her way out of the cave system. After a long and unrewarding search through the labyrinth, she decides that this would be the perfect place to leave Cadence… and all she had to do was teleport out.

Chrysalis got back not a moment too soon, as Shining Armor burst through the door looking wildly around for Cadence. When he saw Chrysalis, he smiled. “Thank Celestia,” he breathed. “When I heard a Changeling had been sighted near here, I thought the worst!”

“Do you not think I could protect myself?” Chrysalis asked, falteringly trying to assume the character of Cadence.

“I -- I only thought I would make sure,” Shining lowered his head.

This was going to be harder than Chrysalis thought, but she decided to put her heart into it. As a Changeling Queen, she was pretty good at remaining unnoticed, but the responsibilities of being an Alicorn Princess bride-to-be was certainty taxing, and they were taking their toll on her attitude. She had already left Canterlot once on “royal duty” to get Flare, one of her minions, to come back in the city with her. It was pretty easy from there to frame him so there wouldn’t be any questions about “Cadence’s” validity after the Changeling sighting. The story she had given him was a simple one: He was a rogue Changeling who had excommunicated himself from the Changeling Queen, and hoped to live a normal life in Canterlot. Chrysalis felt the story covered it nicely, and she trusted Flare to act his part well. He had been a good general… a shame, really.

Chrysalis’ new plan was to strike on wedding day -- the day in which Sining Armor’s love would be at its height. She had conveyed the message to the new general the day she had brought Flare back, so everything should work out. It would have been nice for the army to sneak in on the train disguised as normal ponies, but unfortunately it’s more complicated than that. A normal Changeling can’t just transform into a pony on a whim -- the target must be at least within sight for a Changeling to assume his or her appearance. The closest town without a giant shield covering it is Ponyville, and it would be near impossible for a massive army of Changelings to get near enough to the town and not be seen. Even if they could, those guards with the probe thingies…

They’d just have to break the shield. In order to do that, Chrysalis would have to work even harder to weaken Shining Armor by absorbing his love. Or she could just attempt to get him in mind control…

That would be tricky, and it would take a while. Chrysalis figured she’d give it a try anyway, it would help smooth things out when the big day came.

Enter a crazy purple unicorn. “Sunshine, sunshine! Ladybug’s awake!” Who is this creep, anyway? One thing was painfully obvious early on… she was a threat. Chrysalis didn’t know how Twilight caught on so quickly, but something must be done about it. Fortunately, none of her friends suspected a thing. Chrysalis of course recognized them as the bearers of the Elements of Harmony, and knew they must not find out. Her solution was to busy them with the wedding as much as possible to stop them from having time alone with Twilight. Chrysalis soon realized there wasn’t much else for the six to do. She felt that asking for a third revision of her dress would be a bit too much over the top, and there were already vast amounts of food ready. What if I made them bride’s maids? I could use those others I’ve been practicing my mind control on to do my bidding…

The rehearsal was almost a disaster. That stupid little unicorn barged in and came very near spoiling everything. The time had come to put her away, and Chrysalis knew just the place. It was all too easy to get the blubbering unicorn down to the caves, and Chrysalis just couldn’t help gloating a little about it. This day was going to be perfect

The moment had arrived… no sight of the Changeling army yet… good, wait until everyone was inside…

“STOOOOOOP!”

You have got to be kidding me. How did she even… quick, say something. “Ugh, why does she have to be so possessive of her brother?” Uh-oh… to aggressive… “Why does she have to ruin my special day?” Better… I think this crying is pretty convincing.

“Because it’s not your special day… It’s mine.”

The game was up. The army should be here any moment. Time to get serious. But --

“NO. You won’t.” Celestia was positively glowing… “You may have made it impossible for Shining Armor to perform his spell, but now that you have so foolishly revealed your true self… I will protect my subjects from you!”

The moment had arrived to see if the whole wedding ordeal would pay off, and Chrysalis was having her doubts. Green light met yellow, and to her surprise Chrysalis was able to overpower Celestia in almost no time… Perfect…

And her six little comadrés think they can get to the Elements… we’ll see what the army has to say about that. They’re on red alert for those six.

Once the six were back, Chrysalis knew everything would be easy going from here. Her army was going a little bit crazy, but as long as they kept it all inside Canterlot, it should be easy to expand from here…

Chrysalis snapped back to reality in time to hear Shining Armor say, “Is the wedding over?”

“It’s ALL over!” She taunted.

After Shining Armor’s pitiful attempt to cast his spell anew, Cadence moved over to him, “My love will give you strength!”

Chrysalis laughed this off. After all, no one besides a Changeling could transform love to power… right? Actually, I’ve never really read up on that… Outwardly, she exclaimed, “What a lovely but absolutely ridiculous sentiment!” Chrysalis moved toward the window. They ARE going a little crazy… not much love down there. Oh well…

Suddenly everything was bright lights… Flying through the air… What is this? Pain...

The End

I hope I cleared up all those plot holes. If you know of any others I didn't adress please let me know.

While this does take care of some plotholes, my main issue with everything Chrysalis did is it made her, the queen of the changelings, presumably the most competent changeling in existence, look incredibly incompetent and more than a little dumb. While this headcanon does plug the holes, it still makes her look ludicrously sloppy, to the point where it's difficult to believe.

Which leads me to believe that the Changeling race has smaller brains than ponies. I mean, just look at the way they entered the city: plummeting head-first into the ground. Couldn't be too smart, I imagine. They also started running amok through the city which was not part of Chrysalis' plan. So while Chrysalis was more highly evolved than her minions, she still had the characteristics of a Changeling.
