Citrus reviews "The Ticket Master" and "Applebuck Season"

I told you these would be irregularly released. Time to review more ponies.

I could make a Brady Bunch joke, but I'm not a terrible person, so no.

Another episode that ends up just being decent. It's a bit better than the pilot, and it's still good fun, but there's almost nothing remarkable about it.

Almost.

Dat voice acting.

So yeah, it's another one of those episodes where a character has the key to somebody's happiness, but UH OH, all his/her friends want a piece of the action and lessons about whatever and bleh. The greatest strength of this episode is the fact that it's these characters who are going through the motions of this troped-up story. Not exactly the perfected humor we'd see in some later episodes, and the VA's still haven't achieved 100% synchronization (except Tabitha St. Germain, she is a national treasure), but we're seeing the beginning of some slightly more nuanced writing for the characters. For example, the humor surrounding Rarity's writing is less based on her prissiness and the fact that she makes dresses and more on the fact that she takes all her emotions to eleven. It's really basic at this stage, but we're getting there.

Press Y to synchronize. HAHA, see what I did there?! It's funny because Assassin's Creed exists. Gawd, I'm so freaking hilarious! I should work for EQD.

But we're only three episodes in, so the show is still in its infinitely awkward stage regarding the animation. Everything's kept as simplistic as possible (still an abundance of shots where we see the ponies only from the side), and there are some pretty noticeable gaffes with lip synching at times. That said, there are some pretty great expressive moments with the simplest facial expression or body language here and there.

You are tearing me apart, Jean Dujardin pony! Also, DAT CLOUD.

Overall, predictable, but harmless enough and ultimately fun. This episode still sits in the category of "this is actually pretty good for a show made for little girls", much like the pilot. Hopefully, we get out of this stage of the show soon; I need something meaty to tear into.

Mmmmmm, meat...

7/10

"DUUUUUUUUUUDE, I'm trippin' out about ponies and stuff, dude!"

"I dunno, but do you ever just wonder what, like, the color's mean...?"

There's probably an image that better represents this episode than this, but there is no image that better represents humanity.

I like this one. The show's still trying to find its feet, but this episode works as a pretty good beta for great episodes in the future. If this episode provides anything at all, though, its a case for AJ being Best Pony. Hell, the characters within the show hold a rally just to congratulate AJ for being incredible.

"Totally worth the funds we took from the sanitation department! Just make sure you don't create any trash between now and next month."

AJ great is that her most persistent character flaw, her stubbornness and refusal to own up to the fact that her way of doing things may be faulty, is one everyone can relate to on some level. While the episode certainly plays it up for laughs, learning to accept that one has made an error in judgement is a mature lesson to teach to pretty much everybody.

AJ's denying of the truth is also a pretty clever form of the "Element flaw" (the specific character trait that appears to be the opposite of the Element the pony in question is suppose to represent): the Element of Honesty is not honest with herself.

[/deepness]

It's a well-paced little tale with some legititmatley funny moments sprinkled throughout. The overly dramatic stampede, AJ's various levels of mental decay, that moment when Dash just sorta collapses on Twilight's balcony, and the "baked bads": it's all good.

It's straightforward and simple by design and offers a solid 22 minutes of entertainment that at the very least ends up being harmless. It's not an episode that I go out of my way to watch, but I'm always glad I watched it.

"John Doe has struck again! Not sure which Deadly Sin this is suppose to represent, though. I think he was just kind of drunk this time."

Random thoughts

Man, were those fashion saddles weird.

Rarity finally realizes that those fashion critics were not laughing with her.

Look, Mrs. Faust, I get it. They're horses. Horses wear saddles. That isn't too much of a stretch in logic. But these just didn't work, man. Ignoring the question as to why saddles would have even been invented in a society made up of equines, there's just no way you can make a saddle work as fashion. The only thing they accomplish is looking bizarrely kinky. Somehow kinkier than just being buck naked. Kudos to that, I guess.

I'm not sure whether the kinkiness of the saddles was meant to appeal to the key demographic of little girls who probably like dresses that consist of more than leather straps and a harness. But I guess it's not your fault that most people are not as open minded to the wonderful and wacky world of sexy ponies as you were. We all can't be Champion RD92, unfortunately.

...

If you were expecting some Digibrony explorations of the show's themes or deeper meaning, than you're going to be disappointed with this review series. The only audience that appears to be in luck are those hoping to explore the sexual undertones of the saddles.

If they really wanted sexy saddles, they would have gone for vaulting surcingles. Specifically built for 'gymnastics on horseback'... ;)

Anyway, I liked The Ticket Master a lot, it's the episode that made me realize what an enjoyable show it was. If it wasn't for that episode, I wouldn't even be a brony probably.

What a pretty complex review. Loved it! This might convince me to do another review but, for Mask of the Phantasm. :P
