Parents seem to think you can't have "REAL" friends on the web.

So this seems to come up, especially from my mother, all the time. I'll usually be in the middle of a conversation with someone over the web and I'll be summoned out of my room. And while I am trying to get back into my room my mother will usually respond with, "I think this is a little more important that talking."

 

"But it is really important!"

 

"I think I have invested more in your life that your so called 'friends', would they really be there for you when you need them?"

 

"They are true friends."

 

"And how would you know that?"

 

To which I can't reply why because many things about me she doesn't know. Like how I failed a suicide attempt and came to the forums for help and some of my best friends from skype. Also the other time where I said I was going to go kill myself while I was home alone. People from the forum rushed to my aid without question and just wanted to help me.

 

I can't tell her why people on the internet can mean so much to me; that I've shared so many beautiful moments with many people, and half of them I can't ever tell her. That means I still sit here while I am told that people on the internet aren't "real friends" and I have no way to defend myself against such a preposterous concept.

 

I am fully aware it is healthier to have friends that you can meet up with physically. But it still goes to show, that you can still have just as good a relation with people at any distance with media nowadays. And for now, I wait, under the oppression of old ways of the past generations that don't understand new concepts.

Parents think I'm addicted to the Internet. Maybe I am lol. But at least I have a social environment here ^_^

The ironic thing is, most in-person friendships START as internet friendships. I know about 90% of mine have.

Times change.

Parents don't understand that it's not the 80s anymore and we therefore don't have to meet every friend in our life in school/college/bible study

It's like they think the internet is 100% filled with pedophiles who'll ask me for my address and I'll tell them where I live because I'm totally smart enough to do that.

There will be a time that will come where you will have to defend yourself against your mom's incessant claims on "false" friendships. As you currently lack the stomach to truly believe in what you're saying, it can be remedied with practice.

 

if your mother is the type to be stubborn then I would not hesitate to practice right now. Stand up for everyone here. Let her realize how wrong she really is.

I completely agree with you, a year ago I'd never thought I could have a true friend over the internet. I'm happy to say I was proven dead wrong :)

 

 

But I can't really blame them, my parents were born in the 60's, no internet, no mp3 players, etc. They haven't experienced this type of thing, we're really the first generation to experience social interaction via internet. For all they know, we'er a bunch of creeps. :3

parents think that everyone online is a 30-year-old pervert creep who you can't trust, which is complete bull. i'm online. i'm not even 20 years old, much less 30. and i don't creep on people. plus what about the whole "meet new people" thing? you can still meet people online. i met my college roommate for this year on facebook and i have yet to meet him in person. they're just overprotective.

 

P.S. @, I am very proud of you for overcoming your suicidal thoughts. :)

Heh, I was a bit suicidal a few years ago, at least my parents are slowly realizing that Online friends are just as important as IRL friends.
