Harmonic's Review of MLP Forums

Harmonic Revelations

So I decided I might as well review the forums as a whole and mainly because at this point I just might as well get this out there for you lovely peoples who are interested in my thoughts about the forum and such, so I might as well put this out there.

Visual Style:

So let's start by talking about the visual style of MLP Forums. I love it, plain and simply. It just blends so well with MLP itself that it's an incredibly user friendly style. In fact, out of all the MLP Forums I've been on (A lot), I'd say that this is perhaps the best designed one. It's just visually stunning. I would have to say that the bright colors make the forums feel very friendly and calming. The style of this forum is really unmatched.

The art style is just stunningly cute and I love the forum banners the community works on, they're really amazing. :)

Community:

Next I'm going to talk about the community, this is going to be a long paragraph so bear with me, please. The community has to be the best on the internet, I mean, it really does. We're so large yet maintain this close bond with each other in a way that's very hard to describe. I am pleasantly surprised at the maturity of the users here, we can discuss mature topics without dissolving into pure insults and banter (for the most part) and well, that's not something I've ever seen anywhere else. In addition, the user base is just amazing, we have such a diversity, we have funny people, calm people, hyper people, serious people, intellectual people, laid back people, younger people, older people. We have everything on this forum, and it's absolutely amazing.

I've made many great friends here, but in a way, we're all friends here, the forum community is friendly, even to strangers. Despite our differences, the forum is incredibly close and supportive of each other.

And really, the staff is astounding. They do their jobs with unmatched skill and effort, and I'm very grateful to all of them for running this forums smoothly. I know it's a hard job and I appreciate the unimaginable levels of effort and the love for this forum and it's community from which this effort grew. I look up for all of these Poniverse staff, moderators, and Admins, they do so much for the community with little incentive besides their love for this community.

I would truly do anything for this amazing community, as it has done so much for me.

If I had to say anything negative about the community, it is saddening how many users join and just immediately leave. We need more new users because their opinions are always valued highly and new faces are always a welcome sight.

Organization:

This is one that changes constantly, but still remains familiar. The forum sections are changing constantly, but each one serves a clear purpose, and in my opinion is easy to use even to people unfamiliar with forums or just usually confused by them. I find the descriptions on each subforum infinitely useful for helping me (And I'm sure countless others) figure out what to post where.

This is one of the most straightforward and user-friendly forums I've seen, not only that, but with the incredibly helpful staff, it creates a welcoming atmosphere.

Summary:

Well, I just simply love this community to an extent it is hard to express in words. @Feld0 is incredibly well-humored, intelligent, and nice, and it really reflects in all of the sites he started. I believe that Poniverse is one of the best networks out there and I am incredibly proud to be a part of it's membership. This forum has to be one of, if not the, best forum I've ever been on in my entire internet experience.

I have, in my past, tried different forums and never found where I fit in until I stumbled upon this marvelous forum. I love you guys, I really do. I am very grateful for the mere opportunity to participate in this community.

As Poniverse continues to grow and prosper, only more great experiences lay ahead of us. :)

The staff here is impartial at their job, they are funny, in touch with the community, intelligent, fair, and just all around great. Call me up when you find another staff team that meets all those requirements. I'll be waiting, forever.

They put in an infinite amount of effort to keep this place running smoothly.

That is your opinion, not a fact.

I dislike the staff team :)

Some are good some are not as good.

You're throwing bricks from a glass house. Do you even know how hard it is to be a moderator? I'm speaking from personal experience with other forums, are you? The amount of effort to keep this kind of community running is soul-crushing.

Yupp.

I've been a moderator on a forum before.

How does that change the fact that i don't like how these people handle their stuff?

I'm simply stating that your comment was immature, and uncalled for. You could have at least used a sentence to explain what you disliked, rather than a meme. You're not helping by not explaining your reasoning. Without explaining yourself all you're doing is insulting the staff, not providing feedback.

But its the truth and my opinion in the matter? Some are bad at what they are doing.

Please elaborate what exactly it is you dislike, that's the opinion I'm waiting for. Until you do, this back and forth is pointless.

I'm sorry that a staff of about thirty moderators is incapable of catching every infraction among 14,000 members, I truly am. I'm sorry they can't handle the site like they used to when there weren't half as many members. Seriously, Vicke, things changed to accomodate the growth of the forums.

While they can't do everything perfectly, as they are human, they are doing the best they can muster. Have you ever considered that the "Changes" worry the staff as much as they worry you?

Favoritism is an unfortunate side effect of the whole "They're human" thing, get used to it. We're becoming like every other large forum because this is what a large forum is like, if you don't like that, that's too bad, but unless you have a solution that doesn't involve a staff-run totalitarian regime nothing is going to be change to accommodate the way things "used" to be.

The staff does what they can with the tools they're give, and I for one am infinitely grateful.

Are you saying that there is 14,000 members online 24/7?

That is something stupid to bring up because there are never even 1000 online at the same point. When they are doing wrong and stupid things they are supposed to change it, but they don't. Those who constantly makes weird and dumb choises should be replaced! Their job is to handle things the right way and to make sure they got the information that is nessicary, it does not matter how many members there are Online! Its a job thats should be handled with care and not make hasty decisions. If they don't, they are not cut out for it.

And about that favoritism part.

Its the fact that they deny it that makes me scratch my head.

This stems back again to "They're human", moderators, like everybody else, have a sense of pride and dignity, and while that may lead to some less-than-informed decisions, I will relay this once more, Vicke, ALL people do, you could scout out for the best moderators on Earth, hire them, and they would still be prone to flaws in their decision making.

Any person with a reasonable sense of self-worth would deny such favoritism. Are you telling me if you were in their position, Vicke, that if somebody accused you of favoritism, you would say "Yes, I don't do my job right, I pick favorites"? I very highly doubt that.

What you're getting at is that you want their decisions to be completely impartial and perfect 100% of the time? If so, I recommend you move into some kind of fantasy land, because that's not going to happen anywhere, anytime, ever.

I have never denied the fact that they are human and that they make mistakes. Its the fact that they don't do anything about these mistakes. And its simple, some moderators are not cut out for this job. From people i've asked its almost always the same moderator being pointed out to be bad at its job.

And i talked to someone that happened to be in the team. And judging by how he spoke of the whole situation they have hardly even bothered with fixing these issues!

And we can't blame the moderators 100% for this.

We have to blame the members for being cowards and not being able to stand againgst the moderators when the mods have done something wrong.

Majority don't even bother with arguing with the moderator because they either know its no point or because they simply don't have the guts and are afraid of getting even more stupid warning points.

It all makes sense now, Vicke. You're complaining for exactly the reason I suspected, you're making a case against the mods doing their jobs right by using an example of when they actually do do it right.

So you're actually arguing against the mods because they don't do things the way you want them to. The mods are here to enforce the rules, and I've seen the community get mad when they do just that.

I've seen the community get angry because the mods don't use favoritism, IE, Spazzy, LF, and in LF's case, when they came back, are you going to use that as an example of favoritism?

Is there anyway to please the community?

I've seen plenty of much beloved members get banned, favoritism is not as big of a problem as you claim it to be.

What?

I clearly said when the mods are not doing their job right!

Look at the blog entry i liked, there are plenty of examples of cases where the mods have made dumb decisions.

But the list would be even longer if it was of smart decisions. You're treating moderators like they're more than just members sent out to serve the site, they aren't.

You clicked on this blog to get my opinion on the forums, and you got it. Stop acting all surprised.

Nope. I treat them like everyone and anything else.

I could be more specific, but that would get me in trouble,

Sure, the staff makes stupid decisions sometimes, but I've been on dozens of forums, and they've all been worse than this one staff-wise, usually their mods are just power hungry and totalitarian, this site has a laid-back atmosphere that's incredibly friendly.

I actually love the fact that the mods are the way they are.

Screw being a mod. You receive flak, are expected to be at your best at all times, and hardly anyone will cut you much slack if you make a mistake. You don't want to be a moderator.

The job is a lot more stressful than one might think. Especially for people who aren't cut out for it and when it's time to dismiss them for performing poorly, it often leaves a bitter taste in their mouth. Not good things to go through, as I speak entirely from experience. I sucked shit at it, and I paid the price for it with my self-esteem.
