What Is This? and Setting the Stage

Just when I thought I couldn't find any more ways to waste my days...I discovered the Pokemon Emerald Randomizer.

Developed by a fellow named Arty, this ROM editor randomizes every element of Pokemon Emerald. Wow, now that I have that typed, it seems silly to include (isn't it obvious by the title?) However, this editor literally randomizes EVERYTHING: Pokemon, abilities, items, even names! It includes a nice UI to modify the settings however you want, so you can decide how crazy the game gets. Find it here.

Anyway, I decided to do a picture-based Let's Play of my playthrough. But first, two things: I have played Pokemon before, and I love the series (but I tend to grind for a while...I'm trying to get out of that habit, however). Second, I haven't played this editor before, so things might start off a little bumpy. Hopefully not, but still.

Anyway, onwards to the Editor!

Here's how the UI looks before loading a ROM:

A lot of options, right? I read up on what each setting means, then jumped in.

Might as well go truly random: I started off by setting all three starter Pokemon to random, but only basics so as not to be too OP in the beginning.

I want to be realistic (as realistic as Pokemon can get), so I kept the abilities and types the same. However, wild Pokemon can now hold a variety of held items.

To make sure I don't get screwed over with starters, I checked Ensure L:1 Attacks Do Damage. This ensures that Pokemon who normally don't spawn with a damage-dealing move at low-level (like Magikarp) have some type of damage-dealing attack to begin with.

Area-Unique 1-1 Substitions is checked. This means that all the Pokemon in one area of one dungeon/Route are replaced by the same Pokemon of another type. For instance, all of the Zubats on level 1 of a cave are replaced with Treecko's, while all of the Zubats on level 2 of the cave are replaced with Torchic's. Global 1-1 Substitutions mean that all of one type of Pokemon in the world are replaced with one other type (all Zubats in all caves become Treecko's). Completely random means just that.

I love all generations, so I checked Ensure All Pokemon Appear. This means the game will try to spawn all 493 Pokemon.

I don't quite understand what Keep Evolutiion Forms Intact means, so I left it unchecked.

Of the few times you get to trade Pokemon in-game, the trades are usually...well, lame. I checked Randomize Trade Pokemon, which means that both what is offered and what is wanted by the trader will be totally random.

Under Palette Options, I checked Use Type-based Colors. This gives every Pokemon a new palette that is based around their type. Hopefully this'll entice me to use some new Pokemon I find.

We're going hard mode: ALL Trainer Pokemon will be completely random, which means a double battle might have a Magikarp and a Groudon. Hopefully I don't encounter any crazy battles like that right off the bat...

I checked Randomize Trainer Held Items and Use Items, which means just what it says. I also checked for my Rival to keep his/her first Pokemon, so I'll at least know ONE of their Pokemon.

Finally, I checked to Redefine Trade Evolutions (Pokemon that normally need to be traded with a link cable now evolve by other means), Randomize Pickup Items (stuff picked up by the ability Pickup) and Randomize Field Items (the Pokeballs on the overworld now contain random items), and TMs Come in Stacks of 90 (I remember never using TMs, as I was always paranoid that I would waste the TM).

Anyway, these are my settings. Let's get to the game!
