Joining Fandoms

DIS BE ANOTHER ONE OF DEM VENT POSTS, HOMES.

In fear of being criticized and/or ridiculed (yah, I'm paranoid. DEAL WITH IT! :S), I'm gonna be spoiler-ing the main bits of this blog post. If you're not here to give me advice or just in general be cool, y'all might as well not read any further.

As some of you might know, I've used the term "furry" to describe my interests for quite some time. Recently I've been trying to get into the fandom a little bit more closely. I've joined them fancy websites 'n' such. Fur Affinity, SoFurry, Weasyl, all them. Thing is, though, I feel real... well, I guess "claustrophobic" would be the best word to use. I feel claustrophobic. Like, anything I try to post/share gets drowned out by thousands of other submissions. I feel a little lonely due to that, as well. I haven't had the chance to make any friends.

Another problem is that though I've identified with the term for a while, I know little to nothing about the fanbase, save for some of the vocabulary, the most popular types of "fursonas," the fact that it has a very vocal "creepy part of the fanbase." Some would say that that's not a big problem and all you need to do to be part of the fanbase is enjoy the thing the fanbase is based around, but I tend to disagree in this case. I'd like to know more about the history. I'd like to make friends with others who like what I like. I'd like to get to know the fanbase!

So, if any of y'all are furries too and can give some halp to a brotha, or if you're just a cool dude who has good ideas, please share! :s

Oh, and...

TL,DR: I don't know what it means to be a furry and I want to.

If you read that, thanks for reading and please give some input.

Fellow furry over here.

"I don't know what it means to be a furry and I want to."

It pretty much means that you like anthropomorphic (Anthro) animals, though feral can count as well.

The concept of a furry was originally brought up in a 1980 Science Convention when a character drawing was starting up the topic of anthropomorphic animals in Science Fiction novels, the term Furry Fandom didn't come around until 1983.

though most fans in the fandom tend to say that it had originally started before that, when stuff like Kimba The White Lion, Watership Down, and Disney's Robin Hood had came around and in order to separate cartoon animals from real-life ones (Such as Lassie, and Old Yeller) they were simply known as furry animals.

As for when the furry fandom hit up on the internet, I have no idea, but all that I know it's one of the older internet fandoms, and has been around for quite some time.

As for the very vocal dark side, I can only assume that you're referring to NSFW material, of which out of all the fandoms that I've been in the furry fandom has had the most NSFW material, mostly due to how we have Rule 34 (most mainly Digimon, Pokemon, and Starfox) being lumped ontop of NSFW material of fursonas, and others.

And finally on the whole claustrophobic thing, I'd say that it depends on what you wanna post. If it's more on the lines of NSFW then I'd say go over to e621, though if it's SFW then just stick with Furrafinity, Deviantart, and other more common sites.

Thanks for the bit of history thar. I prolly shoulda known that, since I've heard of and watched most of those things. I know about the whole "funny animals" deal, which apparently were the precursor to furry stuff as we know it. I was speaking of the NSFW works when I was talking about the vocal "creepy part" and that.

BUT... when I was talking about feeling claustrophobic, I meant that there's too much going on and too many people and everything I try to share gets ignored and almost always gets drowned out by another wave of submissions. I think it's mostly due to the fact that those websites are too big.

If there were a smaller community with active members, that'd be nice. Either that, or I should start posting on the forums of these sites. Or both. Seems I've worked out that part of the situation on my own. :/
