Video Games: Then and Now

Today, I was having a conversation with my good friend, Shyflutters. We were talking about video games and he asked me about what console I was getting. I said the Wii U and I named off a couple of games I wanted for the system. One of them was Splinter Cell: Blacklist. He stopped me right there and he said that the game was a shame to the series. The Splinter Cell series is centered around stealth-based gameplay, where in this game, he said that if you're caught, you can pretty much just gun your way out of it.

That got me thinking; what happened to the gaming tastes of the 90's. Back in the day, games like Mario 64, Sonic Adventure, and Ocarina of Time were the games that everyone was gunning for. Not only that, but these games were also fun to play and they all held a fresh new experience. These days, most of what everyone wants is COD or Battlefield. But, there's a difference between popular games and worthwhile games. I personally don't put the ten-thousand FPS's we have nowadays in the worthwhile category. Maybe my perspective is a bit tainted with nostalgia, but, that's honestly just how I feel, guys.

I'll agree with that. Video games don't have the same meaning they did then. You always had the heavy hitters like Mario and Sonic, but there were also a lot of different developers making different games and trying to be creative. Now it seems like everyone's just trying to create the next franchise. Companies like Rare and Treasure are few and far between these days.
