Computer and download troubles. Someone please help me.

Ok, for anyone who is kind enough to read this, I need some help.

My grandparents have this Windows 7 computer. Right now, it has Internet Explorer on the computer. Whenever I try to download something, it says I need to buy WinZip. I looked around and apparently Internet Explorer just can't download stuff.

So I try to install Google Chrome. While it did install, I can't open it.

When I try Firefox, it says it’s downloading, and once it's downloaded, it doesn't even take me to the installation screen, so I can't do that.

Please. This is stressing me out. Someone help me. :(

Do you get some kind of error when you try to open the setup of Chrome or Firefox? Is the computer up-to-date?

Also, about the WinZip part, try uninstalling WinZip and install WinRAR instead. WinRAR will ask you you to buy a license after 30 days, but you can just dismiss the message and still use all functions.

Your antivirus system might be blocking the downloads. This is very common if you use AVG free antivirus but also happens with other anti virus systems. Try temporarily disabling what ever anti virus system you have and try again. I had the same issue before.

Don't left-click download links. Right-click them and use "save link as" or "save target as" to force the file to be saved. Then, use Windows Explorer to open the zip files - you do not need WinZip, WinRAR, or any other archiving tool to work with these.

Avoid using Internet Explorer's "Open" or "Run" feature when downloading an installer of some kind... it can sometimes cause trouble.

  • What computer do they have, is it old?
  • Get rid of WinZip and install WinRAR.
  • Have you tried to doubleclick the program in the download window when it's finished? Does something happen?

When you get the little pop-up screen that asks whether you'd like to "Save" or "Run" this file, make sure you click save.

Oh, and most downloaded stuff goes into the Downloads folder, so go explore that and you'll probably find it.
