So rewind to about a year ago and try to think of the horror genre of video games. Now tell me what were some of the popular "horror" games.

You could say things like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Space, Dead Island, F.E.A.R., etc.

These were the most popular mainstream horror games of the past few years.

Then comes along a daring indie title you may know as Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Amnesia was known to be one of the scariest video games ever made, so scary that it became popular just to watch people shit their pants playing it.

I too LOVED Amnesia! It showed the REAL way to inflict horror on a player. Games like Resident Evil, or Dead Space never truly scared me. The most they could ever get out of me was maybe a cheap jump scare. Any particular moment where I was supposed to feel terrified of whatever creature was lurking in the dark was instantly ruined when I could just grab my gun and blast through all the terrors like scissors through paper. (Paper isn't scary, despite the cuts)

What a game like Amnesia does differently is that they opt for less oversized monsters and put in more of a creepy helpless feeling. The monsters themselves aren't really the scary parts of Amnesia. Its always the monster I didn't see that scared me, and I feared seeing them because I didn't have a shotgun security blanket to help me.

...

Now let's look at today. Amnesia has really left its mark on the Horror genre of video games. It brought to life new indie darlings that will scare you pantless that would have never seen the light of day before hand. Now people are swarming for a good scare, and I have to say, initially I really liked that.

But alas the old moral proves itself all too true, "Be careful what you wish for." Seeing this new love for indie survivor horror sounds like a dream for me, but I can't help but feel like I regret what I wished for. It seems that everyone now is swarming to do what I call "the Pewdiepie thing" where they play a scary game and just react to it on YouTube. I guess that in itself isn't a bad thing, but it gets real annoying watching the 500th person upload a Let's Play of Slender just to get scared and scream their lungs out. Its just a trend that I feel has overstayed its welcome.

And then that brings up another topic of this trend is these "true horror" games seem to be losing exactly what made me wish for them, subtlety. A new horror craze in video games is a new indie hit named "Slender". Slender is quickly gaining a rather huge fanbase that's even comparable to that of Amnesia's. I mean people LOVE this spookfest. I don't think I've gone a study hall this year without someone bringing up something about it.

I'll admit I liked it too, but I didn't find it very scary. In a game like Amnesia they use subtle elements to get you freaked out at the upcoming monster. But in a game like Slender, there's little subtlety This is mostly because we fear what we don't understand, but I understand the monster Slenderman so why should I fear his appearance. I've seen him plastered all over the internet where he has reached a Meme like level. And memes aren't scary. Slenderman is followed so much on the internet that he ceases to be a frightening image. It might as well be a troll face chasing you in a forest.

Its that whole "fearing the monster you don't see" mentality that made games like Amnesia good. I can see where they tried to implement such an element in the game Slender, but its not as effective.

...

I guess this is mostly just me whining again about something that I've been disappointed in. I was very happy to see real survivor horror trump the action gore games and take horror back, but if we turn it all into Pewdiepie Play Slender-athon then I guess you can count me out of this new horror trend.

I agree. Silent Hill, RE, whatever zombie "horror" games, none really scared me. A few jumps here and there, definitely some creepy stuff, but you can still kill everything. Amnesia was much scarier, but still not really what I've been looking for, as far as scary goes. Now, I haven't played it much, so I'm not very far, but it seems like there's just not enough that wants to kill you. Same with Slender. Creepy environment, sounds, etc, but still not that scary, since you can just be quick about everything and you're fine (but $20 mode makes up for that and makes it an amazing game ;)).

Have played and SCP games? SCP Containment Breach is great. Same feeling of helplessness, except that everything wants you dead. Plenty of monsters coming after you, all with different ways to avoid them. Nice little feature is blinking; you blink every so often, obscuring your vision. Stuff like smoke or gas vapors make you blink more, eye drops less, little stuff like that. It's still very early in development, though, so there's not much done, but the basics are there, and it's pretty fun.

Also, SCP-420-J ;)

Amnesia the scariest video game ever made? I doubt it. There are videos games that are better i think.

"Eternal Darkness" , a Gamecube game. It was very wicked because it had not only horror effects in the game. I remember playing it, entering a room full of horror creatures. And then a Gamecube Error Message appeared, telling me that the game controller would not function. I nearly screamed as i jumped towards my gamecube, trying to reconnect this damn thing. But i got eaten by the creatures... hadn´t had a good save game. Then BOOM, it was just an illusion! I hadn´t even entered the room...

This game drives you crazy, giving you error messages, showing you bugs or deleting your savegames... just to fool you again...

Another good game was "Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the earth" . I just thought this game would show you horror visions just to fear you. I was fooled by his thought. Playing a scene were a creature jumps along a window. Was scary, but i thought just an effect. Some time later (hadn´t saved) i played the scene again, this time looking out of the window. BAM, this thing killed me...

@@Iron Wing, I saw Eternal Darkness in quotes and mashed that Brohoof button! :) I haven't played the whole thing, but a few bits of it.

I really need to go back and buy all the best GameCube stuff. This is high on my priority list.

Yes there are scarier games than Amnesia. I was saying that this was what a lot of people's opinions are.

Hell, a lot of non-horror games can be scarier than Amnesia...

As a kid the final boss of Yoshi's Island scared me shitless! It was such a nice game and then shit got serious. Probably didn't help that Yoshi's Island was the first game I ever beat. Surprise 2nd stage boss, intense music, dark tone, ominous figure in the distance, and then he charges the screen like a freight train. (I also had a deathly fear of trains) Not something that would scare me these days, but it was still something that scared me back then that I still remember now, so I'd say it was an effective scare!

/me looks at his videos and realizes he plays slender...

/scoots away from slender

Yeah, I played slender once, and I tried recording it but I couldn't because it was too scary. Not really build up, just scary. At least Amnesia takes you on a date first...

The thing is that slender is a lot of hype

People just keep talking about how scary it is and like Chinese whispers, it gets worse and worse to the point that people are scared to death of it without playing it.

My friend challenged me to play it before I knew anything about it

The first few times I saw him, I got a bit spooked but at about 7 games in, seeing slender's face was similar to a call of duty death screen for me as it meant that I just had to try again

Slender is just a jump scare that does no damage later on

Amnesia, on the other hand, has you thinking for long through the night which is something that I truely try to look for in a horror

Yes, when you're able to kill the monsters it isn't as scary anymore. I rememer when I played the first Penumbra. I was terrified at first. It was the scariest game I had ever played, and everytime I heard/saw those dogs I nearly crapped myself... But then I realized that I could kill them... God did that ruin the game... It was still a great game, but definately not as scary anymore.
