How do warning points work?

When a user infringes on our Global Rules, they are issued an official warning. Warnings - more often than not - carry with them a point value, determined by the nature of the infraction in question; as seen below. Depending on the on the severity of the infraction the forum staff may modify point value of any warning to better suit it.

Plagiarism: 100 points

Plagiarism is stealing. This includes claiming another's art, music, cosplay, or writing as your own. If you post something made by someone else, give credit to that person.

Pirated Content: 100 points

We don't care what your personal views are on this or whether you engage in it, but don't post pirated materials here, links to it, or instruct others how to go about doing it themselves. While it may not be illegal in your country, this is a Canadian website and we have members from all around the world. Furthermore, laws on this have been known to change periodically. We can't and won't accept the potential liability.

Advertising: 100 points

Unsolicited advertisements - be it via private message or forum posts, are not permitted. You are allowed to link to your own website in your profile and/or your signature, however if you wish to advertise something beyond those two areas you must seek direct permission from Feld0 via the ticket system.

Excessive vulgarity: 100 points

While our rules regarding vulgarity are fairly relaxed, there are limits to what can be tolerated - extreme acts of vulgarity (going well beyond the occasional F-Bomb) will not be tolerated.

Note that the use of racial remarks and other derogative slurs used to categorically demean people based on race, religion, sexuality, or any other determining factor is not allowed, and will be handled as abusive behavior or excessive vulgarity, depending on the context.

Duplicate accounts: 250 points

As outlined in the FAQ, with the exception of a verified technical issue, creation of a duplicate account for any reason is expressly forbidden. The alternate account will be banned instantly and points given to the owner's original account.

Abusive behavior: 250 points

This should be fairly straight forward. Abusive behavior is, quite simply, the act of being a prick. There are many ways in which one can be a prick, to such an extent that attempting to list them all out here would be an impossible feat. If you need to know how to avoid getting this warning, you're probably on the wrong forum.

NSFW Content: 800 points

Content inappropriate for members 13 and up is considered NSFW and not permitted on the site. Any depictions of sexual activity and/or nudity, including those that are implied, are strictly prohibited. Similarly, depictions of extreme violence or drug use are not tolerated.

For more information on what constitutes NSFW content, please see the dedicated FAQ.

If you're at all uncertain if something would qualify as being NSFW, open a ticket and let a staff member make the call. Posting anything close to the line without consulting staff is done at your own risk.

Users that accrue large amounts of warning points will find the following restrictions placed on their accounts:

  • Two day suspension at 400 points
  • Seven day suspension at 800 points
  • Permanent forum ban at 1,000 points
  • Twenty five warning points are removed from one's account every week.

It is important to note that this system exists primarily as a guideline. The forum administration may, at their discretion overturn any warning if they feel that there is sufficient ground to do so.

Users that feel that they have been given warning points inappropriately may submit a moderation dispute.

It is important to note that this system exists as a tool for the betterment of the forum, not as an invisible tyrant that serves no purpose beyond binding the hands of the site staff. Members that are found to be exploiting the system in one way or another, or that are found to be disruptive and/or detrimental to the community as a whole, will be dealt with swiftly and appropriately, regardless of how many warning points they have accrued.

Very minor nitpick, but I thought Feld0 stepped down from being the guy to have the final say on everything

No. Feld0 will always have the final say on everything, this is his site. The Feldian Clause as its' called, will remain there indefinitely ^^

You should really update this page and give notice about the "Complaining about warning points" Thing.

We have no specific warning amount for it. We'll discuss it.

What happens if one gets banned for a week, loses 25 points, and then does something minor like backseat moderating? Is that another seven days?

By the way, anyone else see the irony in the URL? :P

The only thing I would like to know, as unlikely as it is, is there anyway too lower your amount of points?

Read through this FAQ a bit more carefully ;) You'll notice that there actually is.

That is the one and only way that warning points decrease.

Just some calculations:
400 points will be on your account for nearly 4 months.
800 points will be on your account for nearly 8 months.
Be careful, folks.

I really wish the warning points went down faster.  Not because I think I'll get more and worry about consiquences but because I received mine the first day I joined for being too vulgar withou really realizing that the line was crossed and the 100 points I've got are just soooo annoying to see next to my name all the time for so long.

That's how I felt, too, but I think it's ultimately a good thing. If you're so bothered by that ugly stain next to your name, then the warning system has succeeded. It serves as a constant reminder to carefully watch what you say.

This is a great system. In my opinion, it is far more effective than a standard banning system that does not involve points, because this can help you to be precisely aware of where your account stands as a result of your actions. Being able to see your warning points also serves as a constant reminder to not break the rules.

Thanks for the warning point removal system, it's really effective

Thank goodness, the points do go down.
Still gotta live with them for 2 and a half months though.

It's just my rotten luck that an honest mistake would turn out to be one worth 250 points :X
I'm not a bad user, and have a good reputation on most of the forums i visit (i'm even a MOD on a couple of them), so this was a low blow to my pride.

Oh well, you live and learn.

It's fine as long as mods don't get infraction-happy or start nitpicking over minor issues that aren't that big of a deal.  If that happens, I'm officially out of the fandom, because that would mean the mods are in violation of the very principles that the Brony fandom was founded on.

Don't freak out.  I'm not ever planning to leave the fandom.  I mentioned this on the previous topic about the moderation.  This is one of the best-moderated sites I've ever been on.

I'm just using this as an illustration of two things.  First, this is how confident I am that it'll never fall to that point.  Second, to me this site represents the best of the brony fandom.  So if this site falls that far, then it can only mean that the entire fanbase has fallen from the principles it was founded on.

The banhammer punishes justly.

I feel this strange competitive desire to fit each of these listed violations into a single post.

I swiftly apologized to the member I had showered with abuse, getting the warning damaged my pride a little so I felt I needed to redeem that pride.

Apparently a mod can give you 1000 points if they just don't like you >.>

Apparently a mod can give you 1000 points if they just don't like you >.>

This is not true. Moderators are never allowed to employ any manner of personal bias in moderation or any staff work. Any staff members who do this are subject to disciplinary action and/or removal from the staff.

Has there ever been a mod that abused their power?

No, but being human they do sometimes commit an error in judgement. It's important not to confuse the two.

Hmm. There's a huge difference between kidding and being a prick, but OK...

I have a sick sense of humor. I'm used to it getting me in trouble every now and then XD

wait let me get this straight I cannot advertise on my signature but I have had the link to my channel in my signature since I joined the forums and no mod has talked to me about that so is it alright for me to keep the link?
