I don't think that brony documentaries are getting old because, there is so much to tell and a lot to see from their perspective like they are telling a story of how they spend their lives to have fun with other people.
Alicorns don't have to be all powerful. Sure most alicorns are considered powerful, but you can have an alicorn who is not that powerful though they can still hold their own and stand their ground. Not a requirement, just a suggestion.

I think Discord's role in the season finale will have him encounter the villain and defeat him, but before his/her meets their demise, they will try to convince Discord to sway away from his intentions to join them instead and go off to spread mayhem.
I think Twilight becoming an alicorn in Magical Mystery Cure was a bit more subtle, but if I had to choose an alternate episode it would be the end of the Return of Harmony.
