"The alarm went off." It's just how we speak where I live. If you are talking about turning it off, you can say "I turned it off." Or "I silenced the alarm."
I mean, think about other sentences that use it that way;
"She went off on me."
"We should leave, the bombs are about to go off."
"The sprinklers are about to go off."

Those are grammatically incorrect. "Went off on?" How can something be "off on"?
I would never say a bomb went off. I would say a bomb exploded, or a gun fired.
It doesn't make sense to say "the alarm went off so now it is on."
Complete this sentence: "The lights are flashing because the alarm went off. Now the lights have stopped because the alarm went ___."
