    How does one technically "Accept a friend request"? The way I see it, you send one, and then you're both friends. Or you receive the indication, and you're both friends. Is there a toggle you have to hit somewhere, or is it automatic?

      You can change your settings and turn on an approval requirement for friend requests.

       

      Then when people "friend" you, you should get a notification and clicking on it gives the option of accepting or not.
