  1. It might also be a pride thing. Adult dragons may consider talking to "lesser species" to be beneath them. Hence the red one in Dragonshy only saying something once it had been sufficiently intimidated. It showed that it understand Rarity when she was talking to it, but simply opted to not talk back. As for spike, I figure he was in too much of a "hulk smash" mindset... Now there's a question. Are some of the "adult" dragons we've seen actually just children going though a greedy phase? Probably not the ones that spoke, but maybe a couple of the ones in the dragon migration.
  2. I've heard a lot of people wondering what Starswirl the Bearded's spell was supposed to do. After all, they never really say in the episode. First of all, I don't think we can count cutie mark scrambling as an intended effect of the spell. I've heard people ask "So it messes up ponies cutie marks and then teleports the caster away?". I think that's faulty logic. How many things fulfill half their intended purpose when half assembled? If you try to use a half assembled hairdryer it will probably electrocute you, and that's not because electrocution is half of what a hairdryer is supposed to do. I think it is safe to assume that its intended purpose has something to do with the Elements of Harmony, seeing as how both its castings effect them. So what would Starswirl be doing with the Elements? It's stated that he doesn't understand friendship like Twilight does. Many people have headcannoned that this means he didn't go out and make friends at all. Even if that's not true I think it's reasonable to assume that he didn't have a group of friends who could activate the Elements. So I think he was trying to make a spell to artificially activate the Elements of Harmony, using magic rather than friendship. When half made it activated the energy of the Elements, but didn't direct it, so it just scrambled around. When completed it actually activated the Elements. What does activating them do? We've seen them do two things so far. They can Imprison/banish things as well as purify/de-evil things. So, I think that when the elements were activated, and Twilight just happened to be the thing they were all pointed at, they banished her. Sending her to a metaphysical and possibly semi-timeless plane. The same as what I think happened to Nightmare Moon. I don't think she was physically on the moon (it wouldn't account for her face being on the whole thing), and she didn't seem quite "thousand years of isolation" crazy. In fact she seemed to be picking up right where she left off. Of course, this is getting into a whole different headcannon. So Twilight got banished, and maybe she got a little purified too as kind of final step towards princesshood. Then Celestia shows up to rescue her. Why could she do that? Well, Celestia is in theory really powerful, and has experience with the elements and where they send things. Plus, she's already been keeping an eye on Twilight. So it stands to reason she saw her get blasted, or she was expecting this sort of thing to happen anyway. So, TLDR version- Starswirl didn't have friends who could use the elements of harmony, so he made a spell to use them artificially He couldn't finish the spell because he didn't understand friendship, and thereby the elements, well enough. Twilight finished the spell, and the elements banished her, because that's what they do. Celestia came and rescued her from wherever she got banished to. What do you all think?
  3. I think it is typically seen on the 'larger' male ponies. Like Big Mac or Shining Armor. Whether that is meant to indicate age or physical stature I'm not sure. That one muscled up and tiny winged pegasus also has exposed hooves, but with a different design. I think it is meant to be a Clydesdale style hoof. They kind of have this fluff of fur at the end of their legs that falls over their hoof. Clydesdales are somewhat famous for being a large and strong breed of horse (they're the ones Budweiser uses in their ads). Which might be why they use their hoof design on stronger ponies. It's kind of odd I know. Most horses have their hooves completely exposed, whereas Clydesdales have them partially covered. So 'exposed' hooves are not shown, but in order to show that it's partially covered you have to show that there's a hoof under it. That's basically an art style thing I guess. Or I could be completely wrong. On the other hoof... Back in a previous generation the set of male pony toys all had that kind of hoof design (I don't know if they did in the show). So it may also just be a throwback.
  4. It seems like every idea I have for an ask blog tumblr has been done about five times already. One of my main ideas only has one other blog that I can find... but still, I can't get over feeling like it would be rude, or seen as unoriginal. Though I get the impression that the fandom is rather accepting of that. So, I guess what I'm trying to do here is make sure of that/get some reassurance.
  5. Eh, I think they could've fit a couple more songs in if they had just tried harder. Should have gone for nine. I especially like how the first song seems like an outright shout out to Disney opening songs. My only complaint is that I wanted more of it. The cutie mark switch was resolved really quickly. I wanted more exploration of the implications. We only see them struggling solo. I think it would have been interesting to see how the changes would have effected their interpersonal interactions.
  6. I've been a brony since about halfway into the first season, as winter wrap up was the first episode I saw. I had mostly kept up with the community by watching the images that get posted on knowyourmeme. I feel like that has at least given me a decent idea of what has been going on. Though granted I haven't been on a forum until now. Anyway, season three is over, and we've got the long wait until four. So I figured this time I would pass the time by actually getting active in the community. Get on the forums, start a tumblr, all that good stuff. I've been in a rut lately, and some creative projects may be just what I need. Anyway, hope to get to know you folks soon.
