Crystal saw Nexus storm off, and immediately began to follow. She turned around to face Dusty.
"I will be right back, I need to go see what is wrong with Nexus." She turned and trotted off to the barracks. She eventually managed to find the bat ponies room, silently stepping in to see him sitting on his bed. He looked...dead. His eyes, that is. She rarely saw him like this. She went over to sit next to him.
"You OK?" She asked softly. No response. Not even a nod or movement to acknowledge her presence.
"It's about the incident isn't it?" The only sign that he was listening was the water forming in his eyes slowly. He still carried a deadpan look and stood statue still. She moved to hug him-as awkward as it was with heavy armor in the way-to see if she could get him respond.
He turned his head away, trying to conceal his face. His eyes were closed now, unable to escape the horrors that flashed through his mind. The ponies he saw die, the pain others felt over losing loved ones, the shock of somepony getting stabbed in the back by brothers, sisters, spouses. It scarred him. Badly. His father fought bravely along with his comrades only to fall. And he just witnessed the gratitude the general public showed for such sacrifice. If that turned into a fight, he may of killed him.
"There was nothing you could've done. I keep telling you that." Crystal spoke up.
"And I keep telling you thats bull. " He finally choked out
"I couldn't save half the ponies there, and I sat by and let my family die. And everyday it hurts like it was yesterday." He had streaks across his face now, though he didn't sob.
"He gave everything so I could live. He went out like a true Guard. And...that...that is the thanks he gets." He said bitterly.
"Just ignore ponies like that. They really aren't worth the time." She said calmly. He simply grunted in response. Crystal hugged tightly once more before she got up, and headed for the door.
"You'll have fun here. Trust me. Now try to feel better. OK?" She felt helpless to do anything to comfort him, as she knew from experience that it was fruitless. So she simply closed the door behind her and headed back to the orchard. Nexus had his head in one hoof, and while no sound was made, his breathing became sporadic, his face contorted into a face that would make Sombra shed a tear.
