Religion was made because humans do not like to see things they don't understand. They want to know everything. Because humans had no explanation for things they saw, they made one up to fill in the gap of information. And that is how religion was born. And you're right. "god" did just appear. In someone's mind! An idea that they could use as an answer, even if it wasn't true.
