One of my asshole hipster "friends" basically believes that animation is "true art" and shouldn't have anything "wacky" in it. It's clear he suffers from the Dunning-Kruger effect mixed with the misunderstanding of what animation is -,a medium rather than a genre.

I agree on this!

Wackiness is tied to the birth of cartoons, as well as its earliest forms of popularity! Sure, it may have become the double-edge sword that made a lot of people see cartoons as nothing more that "kids stuff", but it still made animation popular enough to showcase its possibilities as well as its potential to be a major story-telling platform. People were interested in animation and what it could do BECAUSE it was wacky and over the top! Without it... Animation would have just died out as a fad. It'd be dead.
