So, I'm planning out yet another fanfic, this time based on the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers series. I'm planning to reimagine the series from the ground up, drawing influence from the show (including unused concepts/ideas), movies, comics, and especially from the original sentai itself. Here's the backstory for my version.
SpoilerWe begin in the year 8007 BC, on the islands of Japan. The Eltarian sage Zordon rules over a vast kingdom of five tribes with his wife, the beautiful enchantress Rita. This kingdom was created in a deal between himself and the Fae that dwelled there.I n exchange for protection from five of their greatest champions, Zordon would give the Fae the knowledge held by the Eltarians.
These five, backed by Rita as their sixth member, became known as the Power Rangers, and all was well.
But then, suddenly and without warning, tragedy befell the royal family. Zordon and Rita's young son Kai, affectionately nicknamed "Bubba", is killed by a rampaging mother dinosaur after he destroys her eggs without understanding the consequences.
In her grief, Rita summons the eldritch being Lokar, and strikes a deal with him - give her power to destroy the Fae and primitive humans, and she will reward him with the blood of a thousand young.
And so, in trying to defend their home, the five tribes, including their champions, were killed. In a last ditch effort, Zordon casts a powerful spell that traps Rita and seals her away on a distant planet. There is a great cost, however, Zordon ends up aging himself into dust, his spirit passing on into the astral plane.
All is not lost, however: he has built a base. A place where magic and technology intersect. A Command Center where he can store the Power Coins until Rita inevitably rises again.
-----
So cut to 10,000 years later. August 28, 1993. The rogue planet Nemesis has unexpectedly come into the Earth's orbit; it's not going to do anything harmful, so some astronauts are sent to gather samples. One of them comes across a rather foul-smelling object that looks like an urn. Humorously dubbing it 'the space dumpster', they then argue about whether to open it right now, or bring it back to NASADA for further study. As if compelled by magic, their argument turns into a violent scuffle that inadvertently (?) shatters the urn and releases Rita and her own five most loyal champions.
Back on Earth, Zordon senses a presence. A presence he hasn't felt in 10,000 years. So, activating Alpha V, his long-dormant robot assistant, he tracks five individuals with Fae blood: the descendants of his original Rangers.
Those descendants just happen to be five high school seniors from Angel Grove, California.
So what do you think?

Wow!
Honestly, I like how I created a deeper relationship between Rita and Zordon than even the 2017 movie did. For both of them, it's personal. Rita is hurt by the loss of her son, and for Zordon, he's not only hurt by the loss of Kai, but the fact that Rita is taking it out on undeserved people and not accepting that she made a grave mistake (albeit indirectly) by not ensuring that Kai knew about action and consequence.

And that part is why I asked if there was any inspiration from the Sentai.
In Power Rangers, Rita never had a son. However, in ZyuRanger, she did. Her name in that show was Bandora, and she tragically lost her son who was also named Kai. And yes, little Kai was also a problem child that destroyed some dino eggs, causing an angry dino mother to kill him in retaliation.
