Thank you for the condolences.
Carcinoma is a type of cancer that grows on the surface of organs (including skin). The growths were in his thorax, either around or on the surface of his lungs. It likely caused the pleural effusion (fluid building in the chest cavity) that precipitated his loss of appetite, lethargy, and difficulty breathing.

One of my cats is sick. There is a high probability that he has some form of lung cancer. Yesterday may have been the last time I will ever see him.

Now more than ever I accept the fact that I am a 32 year old man who can get all sentimental about a Disney princess.

I saw a guy drop his Scrabble letters on the road.
Ya know what I asked him?
...What’s the word in the street?

To your point (because I can't resist!) -- Snake's comment (as echoed by Ocelot) is that the engravings won't offer any essential benefits in combat. The wielder won't become more skilled as a result, and they may in fact overestimate their abilities. This is reinforced in the prior scene when Snake is all but drooling over the M1911 EVA provides him: he favors its technical value above the aesthetics.
But Ocelot obviously is full of crap when he lectures a random Diamond Dog merc about the impracticality of theatricality. After all, this is a man who rolls into battle dressed like a cowboy and gets a thrill out of the slow reload time of a revolver.

I need to get back to my old habit of quoting movies, games, and literature in my status feed without context.
