I don't want to appear as... impolite or something like that. Okay, I could ask them directly, but as I said, I don't want to appear as impolite and this is the one thing that really interests me about it.

Ah. Well, do what you think is best. There's a chance that some might feel uncomfortable, though others might not mind the curiosity. Couldn't hurt to err on the side of politeness though, if you feel weird asking.

I guess you're right. I think I'm probably too focused on the biological/psychological perspective... For a proper first impression and actual deep relationship, you simply have to meet in person. Actually. But society changes and I'm not the one to judge this, so...
