      The problem is simply interaction itself. No matter who the person is, as long as it is a "stranger", there's just that switch flipped and I fail to act sociable.

      That's pretty much how I used to be, but that behavior can be unlearned with enough determination. The key factor to approaching a stranger for the first time would be, IMO, concerning yourself with them rather than how you *think* they might be silently judging you. Once you stop worrying about that, it becomes a lot easier to take the initiative to talk to folks. I know it's easier said than done, but it *can* be done.
