What really amuses me are the reactions. There was that former US ambassador in a talk show here yesterday and it was like he was the only rationally thinking person in the room. All that "The USA are our friends and friends don't spy on each other!" talking is ridiculously naive. Sure, the NSA is out of hand, but that's how the game is played.

That's pretty much how I used to be, but that behavior can be unlearned with enough determination. The key factor to approaching a stranger for the first time would be, IMO, concerning yourself with them rather than how you *think* they might be silently judging you. Once you stop worrying about that, it becomes a lot easier to take the initiative to talk to folks. I know it's easier said than done, but it *can* be done.
