Her living away from her friends would have been the start of setting up the conflict of the friends accomplishing their dreams which will come at the price of not getting to hang out as often. It's like when Twilight said "Our friendships will be tested" in the season 4 opener yet she was always, ALWAYS with her friends in every episode after, why are the writers always dancing around this? It'd be more true to life if that scenario came into play.

They didn't close that out either. Considering Season 6 is guaranteed to come and possibly more if that nine season thing Meghan mentioned a while back is true, I'm not too upset about Rarity returning to Ponyville as she still has a store operation in Canterlot, she's even more popular now, and she has another like minded person in the fashion business that she can teach.

And who knows what the future holds, perhaps they will touch upon this in next season as this season is more focused on cutie marks and how they can use the cutie map.
