  1. Vancouver (or Vanhoover for the pony-inclined) is a city that’s special for its beautiful scenery, lively and diverse community, and bustling arts scene. On top of those qualities however, it is also where My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is produced at DHX Media/Vancouver by a crew of wonderfully talented directors, artists, musicians, and more! BronyCAN is very fortunate and honored to announce that we will have key staff from the show attending our convention this year, to talk about their work and share their experiences with the attendees! Directors Jayson Thiessen and ‘Big’ Jim Miller will be attending BronyCAN to share their stories about supervising and directing the show from its humble beginnings, while Steph Mahoney (Layout Supervisor/Animator) and Christopher Leinonen (Layout/Posing Supervisor) will be around to answer questions about what it’s like to draw and animate the show! We will be gathering our honored guests from DHX to participate in a production panel to showcase the work that goes into the show like you’ve never seen or heard before! Read more about them below: Jayson Thiessen Television Series Director / Co-Executive Producer / Animator Jayson Thiessen was raised in western Canada on a healthy cartoon diet of Looney Tunes, Disney and 80’s Saturday morning shows. His love of the animated medium spawned a desperate desire to draw and create, filling numerous sketchbooks with silly cartoon ideas and characters. Ever since 1998, he has worked in the Vancouver animation industry starting as a classical animator, then transitioning to digital Flash animation and working his way up the ranks to become a Director. In 2009 he took on the role of Supervising Director for the latest incarnation of the Hasbro series, “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” and applied his complete love and attention towards the show, which went on to become a runaway cult sensation around the world. In 2012, Jayson directed the spinoff My Little Pony movie; “Equestria Girls” which debuted at the LA film festival in 2013. He was later elevated to Co-Executive Producer on the series and continues to direct the latest season. He also appears as a guest speaker at various fan and industry conventions, where he talks about his experiences and expertise in animation production and directing. Big Jim Miller Co-Director Big Jim Miller is a storyboard artist, cartoonist, director and improvisor living in Vancouver, BC, Canada. He has worked primarily as a storyboard artist, most notably for 10 years at a.k.a. Cartoon Inc. on Cartoon Network’s ‘Ed, Edd n’ Eddy’, where he was a part of all 5 seasons, the 3 holiday specials and the tv movie. He has also done storyboard work on ‘Kid Vs. Kat’, Capcom’s 'Dead Rising 3’ and the Hub’s ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”. After starting on MLP, he has since moved on to storyboard supervising seasons 2 and 3 of that series, as well as the 'Equestria Girls’ direct to DVD movie. Season 4 of MLP saw Jim promoted to co-director, episodes of which are currently airing on the Hub Network. You can also see his work on the comic strip ‘Mystery: Solved!’ available bi-monthly in Skeptical Inquirer magazine. Stephanie Mahoney Layout Supervisor/Animator Steph has been in the animation industry for 9 years. She’s had the privilege to work on shows such as Atomic Betty, Ruby Gloom, Kid vs. Kat, Pound Puppies and of course My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. She has been at DHX Media since 2008. When she heard about the possibility of working on MLP, she pestered Jayson until she was locked into animating on Season 1. On Seasons 2 and 3 she was in the Layout/Posing department. In Season 4 she went on to supervise Layout/Posing. Steph has been an avid Con-goer and cosplayer for 14 years but this will be her first appearance as a guest. Christopher Leinonen Layout/Posing Supervisor Christopher has been in the animation biz since 2007, and at DHX since 2008 (back when it was Studio . He started on Season 1 of MLP as a Layout/Posing Artist, and was a Layout/Posing Supervisor on Seasons 2 and 4. Other shows he’s worked on include “Kid vs Kat” and “Packages from Planet X”. When not ponying or engaging in armchair radicalism, he sometimes makes comics with the Cloudscape Comics Society (www.cloudscapecomics.com), a group of independent Vancouver comic artists. His work has been published in four of their annual anthologies. Find out more these and our other wonderful guests on our guest page! 2. I have received an email from you, but with (no subject). Were you trying to send a test email?
  3. The invasion is being covered by our comic from our Tumblr. You can catch up on the story here on the BronyCAN website.
  4. Certainly. Just because you can't attend doesn't mean you can't let your talents be known to our attendees.
  5. Okay, I heard about the new series coming out, but this move took me by surprise. Before this you'd have to grind your way through the so-overly-90s DiC and so-close-and-yet-so-far Cloverdale dubs. And trust me, that's not as easy as it sounds, especially for the uninitiated. Regardless, I'm curious on how this'll turn out, 'cause they'll be showing episodes that never got dubbed before, including a lost one with a dinosaur for some reason. Yeah, I don't get it either. And unedited, too. I can hear pen nubs rubbing on those tablets as we speak. Though seeing as I'm in Canada, people like me might get the short end of the stick, 'cause I'm getting this message on Viz's streaming page: For our members & fans in Canada: We will soon have an announcement as to how you too will be able to access all of the great Neon Alley content for free! Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this supposed to be an "international" release? I'm pretty sure North America is comprised of both the US and Canada...
  6. The MLP community is well known for its abundance of astounding fan-written stories based on the series. From ongoing adventures like Fallout: Equestria to short silliness such as Bureaucracy is Magic to timeless epics as It’s a Dangerous Business, Going out your Door. Hundreds of stories go through Equestria Daily’s pre-readers every week, but only a select few get chosen to be in the spotlight. Whether or not they read, people can’t help but wonder what these creative storytellers are sharing with the world. BronyCAN is giving you a chance to put your writing skills to the test: Canada is known as a country of acceptance, regardless of who they are or where they come from. Ponies, gryphons, moose, mules, and yes, even changelings, just to name a few. Many have voiced their opinion on the invasion in BC, but what side do they truly take? Do they fight for Queen Volucris and her brood of Arctic Changelings? Will they seek to end her reign of terror by siding with Princess Apricity and the Provincial Ponies? Or would they rather stay out of it and try to live their life as best as possible. Whatever the decision, it’s your task to lead them to it. In this contest, share a 5000-word short story of a Canadian resident and what part they play (or not) in the invasion. Here are the rules you’ll need to follow: Keep it PG. No excessive violence, foul language, references to sex, alcohol or drugs. You can include a small 600x600 pixel drawing to go with it. Again, keep it PG please. References to Queen Volucris’ brood are allowed, but keep them minimal. The focus should be on the resident(s) decision making. One entry per person please. It must be written by you alone. The winning writer will have their story printed in our con book, and will also receive an exclusive t-shirt! To enter, attach a Word or OpenOffice document containing your story to an email directed to Publishing@BronyCAN.ca. It’s recommended that you write the subject line as “BronyCAN Writing Contest Entry”. Please note that files will only be accepted in .doc, .docx, .odt or .rtf formats. Submissions will close Monday, July 7, 2014, July 14, 2014 Best of luck to all entrants!
  7. I'll give DHX this: they were given a lot of room to experiment for this season, and they took full advantage of it. I can appreciate that they tried some new interesting things, even if some turned out to be duds IMO. Honestly, I felt that most of the episodes ranged between 'meh' and 'okay,' they weren't all that memorable. Aside from the two-parters, "Pinkie Pride" and "Rarity Takes Manehatten" are easy exceptions, 'cause they were flippin' awesome. I can live with the breezies, though not as much as other people. I can do without Trenderhoof, he really bugged me and borked Rarity. I find Maud overrated, she really didn't click with me. I just didn't enjoy these episodes like a lot of people here. That being said, there were some really great moments that really played with my emotions. Allow me to list them from each episode below: Funny Awesome/Epic Sad/Tear Jerking So all in all, while I thought this season was an improvement over the third, it still lags behind season 2 as my favorite season. Here's to season 5 taking it up a notch!
  8. Oh, it's not that I don't like the song, Ijust found it not up to snuff. Although yes, I do appreciate that Luna was finally given a chance to sing this time.
  9. Where the hell do I even begin with this finale? Not only did it exceed my expectations, it left me in absolute awe. First of all, Twilight questioning her role as a princess. Poor gal spoke like many fans here, thinking that the whole rise to princess was a complete waste. Even Spike emulated the audience after the banner was unfurled (which gave me a good chuckle). Welp, they shouldn't be complaining about it as much now that she's got her own castle and role. As princess of friendship, this could open the door to exploring more of Equestria and beyond. Something I would definitely love to see in the next season. Second, a G1 villain that's back with a vengeance. Between this and "Rescue at Midnight Castle," this incarnation really got the long end of the stick (partly 'cause Nightmare Moon already pulled the "everlasting night" scheme in the pilot). This guy is the most devastating villain I have seen in quite a while, especially in a show meant for kids in this age group. Would you want to cross paths with this guy? Probably not given the state of his victims after the magic has been taken away. Seriously, look at their soul-drained eyes. Third, Discord actually proving himself useful to the overall plot. I had my doubts from "Keep Calm and Flutter On" onward, but those went away pretty quickly with his first encounter with Tirek. I mean betraying the mane 6 only to get stabbed in the back as a result? "Got what he deserved," most would say. Not Twilight, though. She saw that he was miserable and gave him the benefit of the doubt he's been longing since season 3. I am greatly surprised on how they handled the master of chaos. Makes me wonder what other crazy shenanigans they'll get into now that he's been accepted by the whole town. Fourth, the fact that the whole episode turned into Dragonball Z in a matter of seconds. The moment the library was blown up, you really could tell that Twi was out for blood. I mean did you see the moves she pulled with the other alicorns' magic? Eesh, remind me never to leave one of the books overdue. But in all seriousness, this overtakes the changeling attack for most violent moment we've had in this series. By over90001000 fold. Rainbow powers, though not as awesome, certainly could prove useful in the adventures to come. Songs were the only weak point in my book, they weren't as strong as some of the big numbers this season. But hey, that's nitpicking for this one. I'll let that slide and leave this finale a 10/10, the best episodes in the series thus far. Season 5, you can't come any sooner.
  10. ...wat has just happened. </Photo Finish> Oh man, it suddenly went DBZ in the fifth segment. I was not expecting them to take it that far.
  11. I honestly thought this episode would've been better if they had more than two sporting events in there. I mean I know they've only got 22 minutes to work with, but they could've shown more of the games going on in the background rather than just have the ones we went through with Spike. You want to have the main focus on Spike, the hero of the Crystal Empire? Fine, go ahead. But put more games in there for crying out loud, you've got like less than 100 medals up for grabs, you could've shown more than two events and the ceremonies. That's the one thing that honestly bugs me. I know sports can seem boring to some kids, but you could at least give some samples of the games they have to expand the lore of Equestria.
  12. That anthem. I literally can't. Oh was that so painful... Aside from that... thing, I like that we're wrapping up the plots between the CMC and Relay team. Went just as I expected, though I hope you creative types expand on the games to account for all the medal events. As far as the lesson goes, my friend Fisherpon makes a very valid point: So yeah, it was okay. Would've been a lot better if that didn't happen.
  13. Over the past month we've been extremely busy preparing for this year's romp in Richmond. We're happy to announce that we have two more esteemed guests coming this August: comic writer Georgia Ball and song writer and composer Daniel Ingram! Georgia Ball Daniel Ingram There'll be more where that came from, so stay tuned for more! ...oh wait. There's actually one more thing I should mention: BronyCAN's sponsoring a movie! A documentary, to be exact. A Brony Tale @ DOXA Okay, that's all we have for today, but don't forget to follow us online at BronyCAN.ca! If you haven't registered for BronyCAN or reserved your hotel, you still have time! Hope to see you there!
  14. Just added Portal 2 and Worms Armageddon to my library. That's another two big ones off my Steam wishlist. :D

  15. The first console I played was the SNES that my middle school had, with Super Mario World, TMNT IV, and Mario Paint. It was my first experience with game consoles. But the first console we've owned in the house was the Wii. Because our sis and her (now) husband had the latest Mario Kart, the folks thought it'd be a great idea to get one for us to play them online. And our library's ballooned with more amazing games, both old and new. Nintendo made the right call making the Wii very accessible, it opened our eyes to what games can do.
  16. It appears I have removed the parasite formerly known as the hard drive from my Alienware... freaky. Now to just get a fresh one and I'm back in business.

  17. I actually appreciate the fact that there's no new episode tomorrow. Being in the Pacific time zone, it means I can actually sleep in on a Saturday. And it's on my birthday no less. Thanks Hub!

  18. ...oh man. Sakurai has spoiled us yet again. Five character reveals (four of them veterans, three of those going solo), moveset demos, stages named, new game modes, online details, catering to both casual and competitive players, and all those glorious pickups! Man oh man, that was by far the best Nintendo Direct they've done by far. I am very happy to see what they're doing with the online, especially with the community guidelines. There's always gonna be one douchebag who ruins a good match, but putting some rules in there should really cut it down by a lot compared to Brawl. And the two ways to play really helps filter out the competitive players with the casuals. Just what the doctor ordered. By the way, I just adore the Villager's final smash. It's just SOOOOO ADORABLE.
  19. In a nutshell, BronyCAN is Canada's premier MLP Fan convention which was first held last August, to overwhelming success. We're having our second year this August in the same place, but in a different tune... You can learn more about us at our website at bronycan.ca
  20. Wrong con, Gemini. This is BronyCAN, not BronyCon. Frankly, you're not the only one to get the two mixed up. XP
  21. So THAT's what happens when two Falcon Punches collide... I wonder how different the effect would be from Ganondorf's punch...
  22. So the Smash Bros Nintendo Direct is at 3 PM Pacific tomorrow. Anything you guys would like to see them touch on? Honestly, I'd like to see them show the online capabilities for both versions. Brawl's suffered from major latency and control lag, so hopefully they took the time to refine that this time around.
  23. As someone waiting for the Wii U to make its mark with Smash Bros 4 and Mario Kart 8, looks to me like software is indeed holding the PS4 back from reaching its hype. But I wouldn't count it out quite yet. It's best to be patient and let those system sellers develop a little more until they're ready to be released to world. At this point, it looks like the PS4 still holds the lead in terms of home consoles, but only time will tell how long that lead lasts.
