      Personally no. they were an influence no doubt. But they've always called themselves a rock band and they aren't that far removed from the hard rock acts like Led Zepplin, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple or even Jimmy Hendrix. 

      For my money, the first metal band was the first to call themselves and sound distinct as a heavy metal band and that's Judas Priest.
