      They have not done so, and they have stated, publicly, that they approve of the fan-made content. Because they have stated their approval publicly, even if they were to attempt to bring litigation against fans in the future, the case would not hold up in court.

       

      Copyright law within the U.S. is a shaky thing. Just look at the Google vs Oracle trial regarding the Java programming language. You would think that would be an open and shut case, but it is not so...
