The Narrator just confused himself by mentioning himself in a story, making him a character in the story, thus there is a narrator above him that is narrating every step he takes. Trying to overcome that narrator, he completely forgets there are other narrators narrating over other narrators that are included to narrate the story so in order to stop the narrator above him he has to stop the narrator of all narrations.
