You'd be surprised how shy most people truly are. I don't know I'm literally the worst one to talk to about things like this, but what got me actually doing things was saying to myself that if I get rejected oh well I move on. Kind of grim and somewhat harsh way to put things, but that's what got me going.

My mum's always telling me to forget the past and look to the future and I guess you and her are right. We can't always think about the past and we all have to move on.
