You can thank the ancient Norse for that one, the Christmas tree tradition was borrowed from. They believed that what we call the Christmas tree had magical properties and could help ward off evil spirits during the Winter when Odin took his yearly sleep.

I sometimes think that. But not very much considering its only a 8-9 year old fake tree with over half its needles gone xD...
