@Dynamo Pad @Bakugou is my Man @Oni Equine
So I’m working on a My Hero Academia OC, and thought I’d share the name I’ve been working on with you guys. The superhero name was easy. It’s “Dawn Breaks”, and her quirk is called Hard Light. She can gather and solidify photons in the environment.
But coming up with a suitably punny Japanese civilian name was SO HARD!! Not knowing the language is rough. I almost gave her an English given name. Between both her parents, she’s only a quarter Japanese, so I could have gotten away with it. But I think I got it down. So for now her name is...
Kin Mitsuhashi (or Mitsuhashi Kin if you want to be
a weebauthentic). I also got the kanji and hiragana for it...Kanji - 光橋金
Hiragana - みつはしきん
The kanji is where most of the effort went. It’s made up of the kanji for “light”, “bridge”, and “gold” respectively. I wanted it to be like the puns used in the canon characters’ names.
So what do you guys think?

In Japanese names, family/inherited names are spelled out in Kanji, while personal names are spelled out in either hiragana or katakana. Typically, the family name is spelled out with 2 kanji, but there have been exceptions. And it's rare when I see personal names spelled out using any katakana; it's usually hiragana, but exceptions happen.
So using the first two Kanji, there is a chance someone might read her family name and accidentally say "Hikuhashi" instead of "Mitsuhashi". Because the kanji for Light (光) is often read as "Hikari". Not saying this is bad thing, just a possible story idea. Misunderstandings about family name pronunciation happen quite often in Japan.
It's a hazard of having a symbol that can be read in more ways than one.
As for "Kin", I realize it is unisex and can mostly used by anyone, but Kin is more popular as a masculine name. (Look up the slang term Kintama to understand why.) I am trying my best to come up with an alternative suggestion, but if you insist on keeping Kin, I doubt anyone would hold it against you. May I ask why you chose Gold?

I guess I was confused because I don’t think of lasers as solid. Like if you drove a car into a laser, it would be cut, not crumple from impact.
That’s actually exactly what I was planning. She’s going to start off with the ability to make these solid light platforms and walls, but they’re blindingly hot and dangerous to touch. Controlling the heat and brightness are goals for her to work towards, so she can eventually stand on them without having her shoes melt. - Show next comments 9 more
