*claps hooves* Okie-dokie-lokie, time for Day #3 of the MLP 30 Day Challenge!
Spoiler
Day #3: Favorite princess.
For a good while, that favorite belonged to Celestia. But over the years, my preference changed. I became less a fan of her "Trollestia" moments, her questionable motives (like assigning Twilight to protect the Crystal Empire as a "test"), and boneheadded leadership skills (seriously, letting Twilight borrow all the alicorn magic under the belief that Equestrian turncoat Discord never told Tirek of a fourth alicorn??
Oy vey!). By the time she showed to be more of a character in S7, it was too late. A new princess took over as my overall favorite.
Yeah, predictable answer. (Also, don't let my negativity from the beginning sway you; I still really like Celly, and that won't change.)
Princess Luna always stood out among the rest of Ponykind. Design-wise, she was the least pastel-like. With so many ponies in bright or lighter colors, her darker blues were really unique, making her pop out of the crowd really easily. Aside from Twilight, Luna was also the most human princess; although she co-led Equestria with Celestia before and after the Nightmare Moon ordeal, she always felt like she was the lesser sister. Whereas Celestia's day was revered, everyone slept at night, making her feel jealous and forgotten. During an emotionally fragile time of her life, the anger and envy got to her, succumbing into NMM, a personification of those negative emotions. A thousand years of having her soul sealed into the moon and the Elements of Harmony and the Mane Six zapping that bitterness out of her never completely dissipated those feelings.
- Luna Eclipsed: Had a kids' holiday named after her. Everyone became scared of her when she physically showed up. She had a load of trouble becoming one with Ponyville, eventually going as far as declaring Nightmare Night over.
- Magic Sheep: The most controversial one. The Tantabus, another symbol of manifesting guilt, did Luna her worst, as requested in the beginning. But over the course of the episode, she tried to confound it on her own. Then at the climax, revealed to create it as a way to self-punish whenever she slept, foreshadowed from before. Like many of those who cut, the pain of becoming NMM and putting all of Equestria in complete peril was so great that the Tantabus's torture helped her cope.
- Royal Problem: Celestia bashed her for being more moody and personally belittled her job as a dreamwalker during their fight in front of Starlight.
But the one that sneakily got into the forefront occurred during Between Dark and Dawn. Like Mean Six last season, this episode subtly foreshadowed upcoming tension when they had difficulty agreeing with which landmarks to visit, but quickly resolving it so it stick out. But over the course of the episode, their communication broke out more and more, culminating in a fight at their picnic. Celestia began hoarding all the vacation time, forcing Luna to tag along when she wanted to do something too. The only activity she had her turn going to was cut short because Ponygliacci, an opera, bored Celestia so badly that she made Luna leave with her. When she said this to her older sister…
QuotePrincess Luna: Because you don't want me to be happy. I always have to do things your way. I bet you wish I'd never come back so you could still rule day and night!
…it sounds very rash on the surface, but call back to events from the pilot and throughout FIM, you can see why Luna accused her of this. This feeling of being overshadowed by her sister from a thousand years ago became revalidated, and being Royal-Canterlotted to her face didn't help any matters.
Aside from major issues of self-consciousness and pain, her time helping the Cutie Mark Crusaders in successive episodes are also a massive highlight. In her own way, she uses her own experiences from the past to personally relay those messages to them. When she has to open herself up, she's unafraid of doing so. Her visits to their nightmare helped open Scootaloo up to Rainbow Dash, who became her surrogate sister; make Sweetie Belle realize that her assumptions of being overshadowed and spiteful response hurt Rarity and others in the long run; and allowed Apple Bloom to not fear what cutie mark she'll receive (in turn helping her friends get them, as well).
Princess Luna's a very complex, relatable character with a host of issues that she struggles to deal with, but always tries to help others when needed.

You don't sound *anything* like Michelangelo!

Between you & @ShadOBabe, man you could be voice actors.

As usually, the points are plenty, they are worth nothing, but there will be bonus points if your answer can make me laugh.

Okie dokie, it’s Day 3 of my MLP 30 Day Challenge! And today is an easy one!
Favorite Princess: Princess Celestia (aka, Best Pony)

Not gonna beat around the bush here y’all: Best-Horse-Sun-Mom literally helped me in recovering from chronic depression in college. I’m not exaggerating, I’m not being over the top. This CARTOON CHARACTER made my real life quantifiably better.
It was a suggestion from my therapist. He knew how much I loved cartoons, so he suggested I pick the kindest, most understanding one I knew of, tell them all the things I held against myself, and just let that character comfort me by not holding anything against me.
Celestia was the character I picked, and HOLY CRAP, it freakin worked. It didn’t just magically cure me altogether, but I didn’t constantly feel like garbage anymore. I felt like I could face the day without crying.
And beyond my personal baggage, she’s just so amazing. Her character design is beautiful. Her pretty white coat, with golds and pastels feeds right into my personal aesthetics. Nicole Oliver’s voice is spectacular. And she just so freaking STRONG, mentally and spiritually.
Love her. She is the BEST pony. <3
