Not sure if your laptop can boot from a usb, if so you may be able to install windows 7 on a usb and boot from that when you want, leaving windows xp on the internal hdd. Not sure how hard this is to do. I looked and found some web pages that talk about it. Most seem to talk about doing this with windows 8. I've not done it myself so no idea how hard it is to set up. Found some web pages. Not sure if any will help or not.
