  1. If characters are needed to be written dumb just to force the plot forward and/or artificially make the other characters appear better, then it's bad writing; A Dog and Pony Show had plenty of it, ranking this episode somewhere between average and bad.

      The Diamond Dogs were written as very stupid with the intention to make Rarity appear smarter, wittier, and better. Instead of making one end of the stick look fragile than the other, why not make the Diamond Dogs intelligent and have Rarity figure her way out that way?

      ADaPS's moral is just because Rarity's female doesn't mean she's a damsel in distress, helpless, or useless. Well, the fact that she accomplished this by outwitting a group of morons undermines the entire message.

      I think you're approaching this from an incomplete perspective. The moral was not that Rarity was smarter than the Diamond Dogs (though she was); rather, the episode displayed Rarity's ability to turn the worst possible situation to her advantage, even though she was out of her element. Despite being at the Diamond Dogs' mercy, Rarity managed to outmatch them through wit and improvisation. Making the Diamond Dogs more intelligent would distract from the narrative.
