Dash's appearance in May the Best Pet Win is as bad as Mare Do Well. Unlike MDW, Dash was in character and not flanderized here, but Dash in MTBPW! was completely cruel and abusive to the animals. It's flabbergasting that ponies like FLUTTERSHY would be okay with Dash stressing them out and treating them like crap. Especially to poor Tank, who Dash didn't take seriously. Add to FS plugging Tank into the race because why not (one of the most contrived plot points in the series), and this ponified "adaptation" of The Tortoise and the Hare fable is an insipid, lazy pool of piss. The only reasons why MTBPW! isn't higher on my worst episode list are because she earned some sweet karma inside the Ghastly Gorge and learned a valuable lesson after Tank freed her.

The point of the episode is that RD needed to learn not to be shallow about what not to find in a pet. I mean heck, the episode really made it clear that the pets were capable of her challenges, so the "cruel and abusive" argument is a load of crap, with played up visuals because it's a cartoon. The only one she was really mean to was Tank, and that was kind of the point, so when she actually needed help in the end of the episode, he was there for her when the other pets weren't, to show her what he was really capable of, humbling her in the process(and this is probably the only time the show actually did it well)

Your defense is terrible. It doesn't matter if they were able to pass her tests or not; her treatment of the animals was flat-out abusive. She should've been called out for it from the start, not have AJ confide to Twi and have the story ignore it afterwards. The cartoon gags don't work, because Dash's goal for a pet is to serve her ego (with one of them — a monarch butterfly — showing major stress after being shouted at). The animals could've gotten seriously hurt or died in the Ghastly Gorge, and for what? To "prove their worth"! Tank set up an extreme obstacle course — one he knew he can't perform — just to get her attention, only to be rejected. That's not funny, that's sad.
Dash showed she didn't deserve a pet. And after episodes like Tanks and Secrets & Pies, she still doesn't.

And again, RD wanting a pet to fuel her ego isn't an issue with the episode. It's the main fucking conflict of the episode, that she's looking for a pet for the wrong reasons. RD didn't want Tank at first because she didn't think much of him, just a slow turtle with little to no flash. The pets never had an issue in Ghastly Gorge because that sequence actually highlights certain techniques each of them specialized in. In the climax though it's shown that she needed pet like Tank, a pet that's loyal and will be there for her when she needs him. This is even more pronounced with how much their relationship has grown together since

Seriously? it's such a blatant visual gag there's no reason to be bent out of shape for it, with the entire thing pan included pretty much filling his entire insides. Not to mention, the second time she merely sends the pie down the chute, you act like she's forcefeeding it by cramming it into his throat
