It's unknown whether or not today's powerful endorsement of Bernie Sanders by Reverend Jesse Jackson will influence the primaries on Tuesday or beyond. But make no mistake — this endorsement will be one of the proudest in Bernie Sanders's entire life, as his endorsement comes full circle thirty-two years later.
In 1988, just before the Vermont Democratic Caucuses were about to begin, then-Mayor Sanders stood at the podium, bucked the Vermont Democratic machine, and endorsed the insurgent Jesse Jackson for president, becoming one of the only white politicians to endorse him and his powerful Rainbow Coalition. His endorsement influenced caucusers, and Jackson won Vermont. Jackson's Rainbow Coalition of working-class and middle-class people across generations, nationalities, and races influenced Bernie's own presidential campaigns.
