If Antietam had been avoided, Lee would have had alot more men, though it mightve just happened somewhere else later. Really, Antietam or something of its scale was bound to happen.

Roman history is one of my favorite times in history, even though currently i know little about it. Rome itself is fascinating to me.

Well the problem with Antietam was it was an invasion of the north that really stood to gain very little. He actually only lost about 12000 men I believe, which is half of what he lost over 3 days at Gettysburg. It was also a much more poorly fought battle than Gettysburg and afterwards he was more vulnerable as well. Not to mention Lincoln used it as propoganda to issue the Emancipation Proclamtion. So yeah, just a big fail all around
