Over the years, Twilight and Shining Armor have been shown and/or implied to be immensely powerful in terms of magical strength, even when the former was still a mere unicorn, with her Element, Magic itself, seemingly being the closest to its predecessor, Starswirl's Sorcery. Totally wouldn't be surprised if they were descendants of Starswirl himself.

Shiny is a one trick pony though - he can do a shield.
I have considered that the five ponies affected by the first Sonic Rainboom may not have been anything special before that though - that the Tree, reaching out to give Dashie HER element, also selected the five other ponies to receive theirs, with the Rainboom symbolic of the act.
