Still dunno why I don't get status updates from people i follow anymore, checked notification options but nothing seems off

There is no longer a notification setting for that, it has been merged with another one after the recent update. You'd have to opt in for everything posted by members you follow to be notified about statuses they post.
This is why not everyone noticed that change. If someone opted in for all posts posted by members they follow prior the update, they normally continue to receive all the notifications, as this setting is now responsible for both posts and statuses.
Another so called "improvement" to the notification system i guess.
